History of Longbows and Crossbows 08/25/2009 08:22 PM CDT
In response to something in the replies to official GM announcements folder elsewhere.

>>In what year did the Pope inact this law? [banning Crossbows and Longbows in war against Christians.]

"When its [the bow's] great effectiveness was demonstrated in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, it was immediately condemned by the church. In 1120 bows were prohibited in Flanders, in an effort to keep the peace. In 1139 the Second Lateran Council forbade the employment of bowmen and crossbowmen against other Christians. The bow was seen as a weapon not proper to Christians and gentlemen."

The Medieval Archer, Jim Bradbury, page 1.

"29. We prohibit under anathema that murderous art of crossbowmen and archers, which is hateful to God, to be employed against Christians and Catholics from now on."

So it was Innocent II in 1139.

They also tried to ban gunpowder, incidentally.

That didn't go over well.

Rev. Reene

"...[gods] are symbols in a way that no human being, however 'archetypal', can ever be. They are actors playing parts that are real only for us; they are the masks behind which we see our own faces."

Thanks, I managed to look up the actual ban once Renee posted the year. It just made me curious since I do medieval re-enactment and I haven't come across this piece of info before.

It's a good book BTW, (I have 2 copies), I also recommend The Archers Tale by Bernard Cornwell if you haven't already.
