Although it was not all that recent, I just heard that Ewart Oakeshott passed away this past September 30th. He was a scholar with a great interest in arms and armor, the author of many definitive books on the subjects, as well as medieval knighthood and life, and instituted a classification system for sword types that is in wide use.
