Artist? 04/02/2003 01:31 PM CST
Greetings,

I'm looking for an artist to draw a couple of character portraits for me. I tried today...and even though I can draw just about anything else...faces escape me :(

I don't have much RL money, but I can make up for that with IG currency. If anyone is interested, please contact me at my play.net e-mail address.

Thank you.

Does anyone know where crowolf has disappeared to? I have tried emailing him but have not heard from him yet and I first sent the email over a week ago; I also have not seen his sn on or anything. If anyone has contact with him please let him know I (a.k.a. Varvefth) am trying to reach him! Thanks!

His website was taken down shortly after it appeared as the Awful Link of the Day on Something Awful. I assume he took it down out of shame.

No, it is still up, just at a different address. As for being awful, I do not think so at all; he did a portrait of my DR character and it came out rather amazing.

The description on SA was pretty much my impression of the art. I still shudder to look at those portraits. I'm glad Simutronics isn't offering his service anymore. It's a shame there's no real artists doing commisions through the website. I suppose you could just hire a typical artist and do it that way. There's been good success with that for some people.

If you wish for an example of his work, click on the link below. Some of his work is actually VERY good:

Something awful? guess like everything else it's a matter of personal taste and opinion. I for one didn't find anything awful with his work.

There has been several DR character portraits that he has done that were great. And we were hoping to contact him for more.

He did a great one of Averalaan and her brother, and we were hoping we could contact him to do the other brothers .. a family portrait

I believe both Trebber and Zurrus were happy with the work he'd done for them as well.

Anyone at all know how to contact that artist?

Pretty much, good thing DR is all text! I think my main hangup is the artist tried to include all the little things in our inventory and it was done in a weird copy & paste way. It looked odd to me and the price people were paying for them probably is what made me not like the pictures.

That's a portrait by a different artist which I prefer. I was just giving my opinion earlier. Horray if you like Crowolf's art, I didn't.

Put it this way. When I can show some of his portraits to people and have them recognize which porn star or model he used as a base for the image, something is wrong. Very wrong.

I really like Kay Allen though. I would probably buy a portrait from her if I could afford it. Definitely a skilled artist that knows what she's doing (versus an artist that has a very vague grasp of filters and airbrushing) and is well worth the money.

I guess now would be an okay time to mention that I do portraits. Pencil, charcoal, ink, and digital coloring if you want to pay extra. I'll even mail the finished product to you. I don't really charge all that much either since quite frankly my work isn't of professional quality and it takes me awhile to even get access to a scanner these days.

Examples:

http://reene.euphoricsoup.com/keljha.jpeg (first prydaen I ever did)

(colored)

http://reene.euphoricsoup.com/galleries/art/twirling.jpeg

http://reene.euphoricsoup.com/galleries/caelumia.jpeg

Like I said it's not great but if you want a portrait I'm out there.

The thing crowolf told me before I sent in my description was to only include things you wanted in the portrait. Also he asked for the character's personality, background, etc. and explained that the more detail you give the better he can do on the portrait. Needless to say I sent him about 2 pages worth of description, both item and character. If any portraits came out wrong then it was usually the person's fault for not including every last detail of information about their character and left it up to the artist to decide for themselves how it would look (which does not always come out the way the person might want).

Kallen is also a very talented artist, its just that I dont really care for his version of elotheans. If I am unable to contact crowolf I may be forced to look into other artists; its just a shame if I can not as I have been looking forward to doing more business with him.

I looked through several of his portraits and I certainly wouldn't want him to do one for me. His pictures/portraits are not well done. The colors blur and blend into each other giving the pictures the effect of someone spilling water on them rather than being well defined images. I can see where Reene was pointing out some of the faces are recognizable as celebrities and what not.

>>Kallen is also a very talented artist, its just that I dont really care for his version of elotheans.

The issue with that is that they're going off the descriptions people provide. I don't know if all the clients are saying that's how an Elothean looks like, or saying, 'It's an Elothean, go to the Dragonrealms website to see an example,' or what. If I were to commission a portrait there, though, I'd be certain to describe an Elothean differently, fitting more with what my mental image of one is.

I'm personally wondering how many of the photos that he photoshopped he actually owned the copyrights to or at least had permission to use.

My guess would be none of them, which means his website is one giant blob of copyright infringement to boot.

You dont trust anyone do you? Actually none of it is photoshopped as I gave him the exact detailed description of my character. He followed the description to a "T".

Well, I have to agree with Reene. I've seen actual portraits and I've seen photoshopped portraits. There may be one or two on his site that weren't photo shopped but for the most part I can see the air brushing and such. There are many of his "portraits" that if you look beyond the bad coloring and messy blurs into the actual faces they do very strongly resemble celebrities.

Actually yes it is. It's not hard to take a description and find a picture of someone that matches it closely, or closely enough that little details would not be hard to add.

Furthermore, they are photoshopped from photographs he most likely doesn't have permission to use. I say this because a lot of it is in fact from porn and I would be very surprised if he did have or pay for permission. I'm sorry you don't believe me and I'm sorry if you feel like this degrades the work he did for you, but that is in fact how he does it.

I'm acquainted with a certain DR-playing connoisseur that doesn't mind sharing his collection.

That and I know a couple of people that run porn sites for a living.

But seriously, if you can look at this picture and honestly tell me the source wasn't dubious at best, you're out of your goddamn mind:

Let me be really clear. Kay Allen did the Elo for me how I wanted her. We all see the entire DR world differently I'm sure. That particular one was done quite a few years ago now - I honestly do have an entirely different perspective now - if I were to have another one done.
