String Skill Gain 01/24/2010 05:47 PM CST
I have somehow acquired 13% of a rank in my previously pristine-empty Strings skill and I'm wondering how this could have happened out of pointless curiosity. Is there something that teaches strings other than instruments and classes?

I recall at least one stat training place will teach a bit of strings.

Did you clean or repair an instrument?

Yeah, I gained .17% of a rank training a stat in shard too. Maybe agility? I can't remember.

It's reflex.

Which is funny because reflex has nothing to do with playing an instrument. That's all agility.

And you train agility by dodging arrows. Yeah, we know. /sigh

(No evasion exp for that though)

You aren't learning strings when you train the stat, you learn it upon entering the tavern. IIRC there's chimes outside that you brush when you go in that teach the skill.

The hollyhocks brush your face as you pass through the door.

[Liani's Heaven, Entrance]
The sound of laughter and gossip fills the air, mingling with the scent of pipe smoke and baking tarts. A warm golden glow fills the room, coming from the north and the famous tavern of Liani's Heaven. Pegs line the walls as places to hang cloaks and hats.
Obvious exits: northeast, northwest, out.

If I had tdps on this character I'd do the train test.

Okay. So I'm wrong. It's been a while since I was there, I thought that was a chime and not a plant.

The best musical offense is a good defense.

Lies, the best musical offense is screaming.

And the best defense against screaming is QQing on the message board!

I would say webbing or killing the bard, actually. Criticism of screams is a dead horse now.

Several musical instruments are carefully laid out on a low, felt-covered table. An ancient grandmotherly Halfling woman glances up whenever anyone enters, and her gnarled fingers lovingly grasp a carved ivory flute. You also see a sign written in a neat hand.
Obvious exits: south.

You consult with the teachers and together decide that it will take 31 moon cycles until you successfully gain a rank in reflex. There is also a fee of 62 Dokoras to complete this training.

That would leave you 1 time development points afterward. If this is OK, you will need to STUDY once again to get your new rank.
>study
(You now have 1 time development points.)

Since you aren't carrying any Dokoras, the cost of the training, 62 Dokoras, is added to your debt.
Your debt has increased by 62 Dokoras.

A lute is pushed into your hands, along with three heavy steel rings. With the rings on your fingers, playing the instrument turns out to be quite a challenge. Then a set of juggling balls are thrown at you -- literally. The end result is a reflex response coupled with a healthy paranoia of small flying objects.
