What is the most effective way to work my performance skill with a percussion instrument? Recently I have been testing different difficulty songs, but I suspect I have been doing something wrong because it does not lock as quickly as some of my other skills. It seems a little time intensive. Maybe percussion is not the way ta go...

PLAY HELP lists the songs from easiest to hardest. For optimal learning, you want to play the one that you can play "with only the slightest hint of difficulty."

If your performance skill is high (>500 ranks or so) you'll also want to make sure you have a higher difficulty percussion instrument too since you'll need that to be able to play songs below the level of a masterful concerto. You can see a general ranking of them on this page: https://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Instruments

I should clarify that a more difficult instrument doesn't mean you'll learn better, just that it has a higher range over which it will teach. As long as you're playing with a slight difficulty you'll be learning well, with the ideal learning coming from the second hardest slightly difficult song. (i.e. 2 songs easier than the first fumbling one.) The difference across all the slightly learning songs is not large, though, so you don't really need to go that specific if you don't want to.

Slightest hint of difficulty. Sticking to that and nothing else now. Mostly what I kind of been doing tho. Just time consuming apparently. Maybe the GMs will do an instrument rewrite someday or something. Thanks for all the advice.

Oh, you must not have been around before Play 2.0. This system is worlds better.
