Ok, so I've had been gone for a while. I am sure economy has changed, what are the standard going rate per volume of metals now?
What I recall when I left.
Lumium I was paying 3p per vol, sometimes 2p per vol on the mainland.
Gold and Platinum were 1p per vol.
Damite was 100p per vol.
Never had to buy haralun, glaes or kertig, but am interested in their going rate.
What about the newer metals as well?
Icesteel, Muracite, and Silversteel?

These are the prices I've seen and/or pay:
Muracite is the armor equivalent of darkstone, and I have yet to see anyone who values it.

Ho hum, so I've been shooting myself in the foot trying to stock some materials then. Figures.
I've been using muracite to tinker with, and mostly push some templates that are still out of my reach to craft with lumium or 60/40 alloy. Full body plate or chain for example, and some of the larger volume shields.
If it is not in demand I guess I will just not bother with it. Have seen just about everything flooded with lumium armor now though. Shame I can't craft some of it to stock a trader. Meh.

Is the problem with Muracite and Darkstone the size of the boost? I'd think many people would enjoy it just because it allows them to test things outside of their normal comfort zone.

(I only have experience with darkstone but...)
They definately have their place and that is what you just described, but it's fairly niche and they are too abundant to be worth much for the size of that niche - at least that is my take.
Darkstone isn't worthless at all, just the niche darkstone fills for me is only 2 weapons that aren't hot sellers.
Now if a younger player wanted to start stocking LE/LB, LB/MBs in a shop, that would have a place as well, however most people would want the higher damaging steel weapons. And someone can make all of those weapons fairly early on (very early on?). Maybe if there was more of a linear progression of the weapons it would be alot more needed but with alot of the popular weapons front loaded in the system I don't think it will ever be a popular metal. (unless of course enchanting changes that)

I think the problem is that it's essentially MC steel that's a good bit easier to work, but not as durable. All well and good in and of itself, it's got a niche, but you have to go out and find them, both being rare. I might go through 80 rooms which is more than most mines before I see either. It's much easier to just make a superior, if harder to craft product, without even leaving the forging society.

For me, it's just I'm at a point where I can either make it in steel, or I can't make it even with darkstone.
Plus I'm still annoyed over the period of time where people kept thinking darkstone brawling gear was somehow amazing.

Main problem with them is that medium C steel does not get much use to begin with, and it's pretty easy to work with as is. I'm sure they would get alot more use if it was High C Steel except higher workability.
But then who knows, they may get more use after 3.0 when many people's effective forging skill would go down due to the Mech Split

I actually kind of hate it. I've only ever found 3 damite veins and a glaes vein (that being like 4 days ago). Think my sum total has been about 138 damite (from the 3 veins and perhaps 5 volume of loose lumps) and I think I pulled 41 glaes (up now to a 54 volume deed). But then I have been looking for glaes and not kertig/haralun, with damite being a bonus. I've missed 2 haralun veins (someone got them before me) and an animite vein (no one got it, it poofed and respawned junk in the 5 minutes I skipped it to check out the rest of the mine). I have never found even a single piece of kertig or ever seen a kertig vein (but then I'm primarily an igneous/metamorphic miner). Although I've pulled a little bit of haralun, think I'm up to 5 volume on hand. Was selling them as I found them to Caraamon at 100 plat/volume, but last I checked he had too much.

Meh, better than me. That's the first vein I've found of really rare material. I've only got 1 vol of kertig, and 2 of haralun and 1 of animite (I found a perfectly pure single volume nugget). Just calculating my 210 vol pure ingots, it's about 14490 vol total. That doesn't include the amount of ore I spent getting my mark.

I was surprised at how well the Muracite turned out. I wanted to make some armor (in this case without career/hobby or techs) that was too hard for me to make in HCST so forget messing with Lumium, and tried the Muracite instead. I think it turned out pretty fantastic!

I actually really like both of the materials. I've been making full sets of heavy plate using Muracite because I don't have the skill for MC steel. So basically anything I can't quite make out of MC steel, I switch to Muracite. Although on the other hand MC steel is 5 density so it can potentially end up with better stats then Muracite once weighted.
So basically if you have enough skill there is basically no advantage using Muracite over MC Steel besides magic resist. (Which is a bit strange...)
Same basically applies with Darkstone too. There is no advantage to use Darkstone once you can craft with MC Steel. (or Steel 3 if you want the low durability.)
I'd also like to point out that durability plays a pretty huge part with my character. I'm running a bard in heavy plate and the gear gets damaged pretty regularly, so durability is really important for me. I'm pretty much going to invest in the armor repair techniques because my gear gets messed up tons.
Maybe the problem is steel is just too good. But I'd like to think that dark stone / muracite have some benefits when enchanting comes out versus steel to balance things out.

>>Is the problem with Muracite and Darkstone the size of the boost? I'd think many people would enjoy it just because it allows them to test things outside of their normal comfort zone.
My problem is that they aren't practical metals, it does allow me to make things outside of my range and thats nice, but its still only mid-steel and honestly it takes me a shorter period of time to go make the money to buy the item already made in HCS than it does for me to find enough dark steel to make something thats of weaker quality. Its not exactly allowing me to test things, if they have to be made with an item that is much easier to work with. This isn't an issue for smaller weapons since some templates don't even have an appable difference between HCS and MCS. But I can make all those items out of raw skill anyways even if I didn't have the techs for it.
Either making it extremely easy to work with or make it a form of HCS thats more durable and easier to work with(this would work for Darkstone, Lumium fills that niche for armor, sans the easy to work with but that would degrade the value of lumium). Muracite can make up for it by having better elemental resistance.
