I am sorting through the info on crafting in general.

I see that selecting a hobby / career will grant bonus techniques in a specific crafting skill. But can we get techniques in a skill if it isn't a hobby / career?

Yes. Careers and hobbies are optional for the most part. The only thing they would be required for is if you want to get most of the techniques in a discipline. I.e. they allow you to specialize in a discipline by giving you a lot more technique slots in that discipline, particularly at early ranks, but are not required for making stuff.

See the table here for how many techniques you get with skill: https://elanthipedia.play.net/Crafting#Techniques

The first column is what you get without any career or hobby, and they can be spent on any technique in any of the 3 disciplines for that skill.
The second and third colums are the bonus techniques you get with a career or hobby, and have to be spent within the discipline you have the specialization in.

Turns out I was looking at things all wrong in game. Was using the wrong arguments on the CRAFT verb to find out what techniques I knew.

I appreciate the help.
