Not necessarily a non combat skill, as it has many uses, but nothing I am doing seems to get it above learning. Mind you I just came back from a couple years' break. What can I do to move this skill? Gem pouches used to lock it fairly well but that seems to no longer be the case. I really don't want to rearrange my entire lore set.

Find a difficult instrument (e.g. bagpipes, tabla, etc.) and ASSESS it over and over. I think there's a 10-20 second timer on it. No more than 30 seconds at any rate. And make sure you're assessing it not appraising, since appraising an instrument is no better than any other single item appraisal.

Also try appraising a lumpy bundle (~30 skins is enough) every 70ish seconds or so. If your appraisal is very high (post 700?), try adding more skins.

Are your gem pouches tied? Tied gem pouches don't teach well.

I find the easiest way to move the skill is in combat, appraise <creature> quick every minute or so. You'll need about 75? ranks before this begins to teach well.

Kind of ironic, given the folder we're in.

This really only works well for non-Lore primes, since most Lore prime players will have Appraisal significantly higher than their combat skills. Even a Lore secondary can pull ahead of the creature they're hunting fairly easily if they spend a decent amount of time outside of combat with Appraisal as a regular part of their non-combat routines.

Granted. I'd never train my appraisal above my combats though (except for lore primary reqs) because alternate training methods are a time sink. Plus, there's not really much of a benefit to training up above your combat skills.

That depends on your circle requirements and willingness to use a craft to meet those requirements instead, I suppose.

I always appraise an object before I climb it when training Athletics. This keeps both Appraisal and Athletics moving especially if they are close to the same level.
