reaching into a barrel on deck, you withdraw a harpoon teathered to a thick hemp rope.
Throw harp at shape
you throw your teathered harpoon, watching it fly with bated breath. It misses.
pull teather
you pull on the teather drawing the harpoon back to the vessel.

etc.
throw harp at shape
you throw your teathered harpoon, watching it fly with bated breath. It lodges deeply into the dark shape.

the harpoon is lodged firmly into the shape, pull again to attempt to release it.
lets say 5-10 harpoons later....
command pilot to moor to shape
at this time the shape will be right next to boat allowing all members to attack with pole ranged or ranged weapons to finally kill the beast.
im unlclear as to weather it should allow people to loot the corpse on the ocean or wait until they make port before allowing them to affect the body. But there should be a limit to how many your ship could kill at any given moment.
