Ilithian Enquirer
12/20/2009 12:15 PM CST
Hello Ilithians and welcome to the first issue of the Ilithian Enquirer! So much going on in recent months! Let's dive right in.
The hot story on everyone's mind: Lyras! This troubled necromancer upstart is packing one evil punch, backed up by scores of evil generals and legions of maggot infested revenants. You have to be living among the farthest sand-blasted caves of Muspari not to have heard of this undead terror. Will these good lands be overrun with shambling horrors? Will this be the end of us all? And will Quentin even notice? Only time will tell!
After the death of the Zoluran Prince, the threat seemed to recede. The undead minions lost focus, confining their attacks to the countryside, mutilating livestock and the occasional peasant sod buster with little discernable purpose.
Yet this false lull has broken of late. Things have picked back up, with the Seconds of Lyras, her generals and lieutenants, and all the rotting hordes now flinging themselves at keep, town, and city across the realm with disturbing frequency. Citizens of this fair province and our own Crystal City have responded admirably. A number of probing and retaliatory attacks have been carried out by this brave population, the more successful of these having come to be known as "Re-deading the Undead", or "Days of Undead".
The Regal Ferdahl has by decree let it be known that Ilithians old and young are encouraged to press the fight to other provinces far and near, lending aid where needed, as well as continuing the tireless battle on the home front. An unnamed Tower source quoted Her Excellence as saying "Lyras threatens one province, she threatens all provinces". Other opinions may differ, but this reporter for one enjoys a ruler with a grasp of the big picture!
In support of this decree, Her Grace Aemmin goes further to announce that all Militia and citizen fighters are directed to hunt down and destroy the undead generals of Lyras where ever they may be, regardless of what lies between, be it mountain, desert, or sea. You can be certain that when any one of those infamous villains raises an ugly head, you will likely see a valiant Ilithian leaping to the fore, or dying in the charge.
So too the Inquisition presses on, ferreting out necromancy in the dark backstreets and woodland shadows in all corners of the continent. Some say the Inquisitor Khurek has been to ardent in the search, and oftimes mistaken in his suspects. Readers may recall an incident some months back where Ilithi's own Commander Jairem and Guard Captain Ceirzen were interviewed vigorously by the High Inquisitor Khurek. Cierzen and Handmaiden Amaldriel have appeared to be publically at odds over how best to respond to the Inquisition's actions. The reclusive and private nature of Our Lady the Ferdahl has made it difficult to separate the partisan slant in the statements of the both the Captain and the Handmaiden, leaving the Tower's intended course of action a mystery to outside observers. Additionally, one has the sense that court officials and militia soldiers alike have become embroiled in the mild dispute, caught between a rock and a hard place.
Representatives of "Inquisite the Inquisition", a local Elothean rights watch-group, have stepped forward citing the River Crossing High Inquisitor for numerous abuses, including allegations of the systematic torture of gnomes, children, and cotton-tail rabbits. Egdun Lud-Maru, chairman of "Inquisite the Inquisition", was recently invited to speak with Khurek in person. Since that meeting, which reportedly lasted for a full night and day, Lud-Maru has since withdrawn all allegations, yet rumors of impropriety linger still over the head of Khurek. When contacted by the Enquirer for further comment, an aid to Egdun Lud-Maru reported that the gentleman was indefintiely unavailable due to failing health.
Military sources are saying that Zoluren to the north is of special strategic importance in the war against the Necromancer. The Temple in Crossing has long been suspected as being a key to success or failure in this battle. Ilithians are consistently part of the effort to charge the great Orb, that mystic defense of our greatest shrine to the Thirteen in all their glorious Aspects.
Yet it seems all is not well in the uneasy alliance with Zoluran. Information leaked from the Ilithi Embassy in Crossing lends credence to the circulating rumor that Ambassador Sendithu has been refused by the Zoluren court. The Tower has neither confirmed nor denied the status of Ambassador Sendithu at this time. Rest assured this reporter will continue to dig to bring you more on this developing story.
Despite the internal shifting politics plaguing the Court, the Ilithi delegation to the summit on Ratha this past week represented the province with diplomatic grace. On return to Shard, the delegation reported that Therengia was predictably absent from the Summit, perhaps preoccupied with the tedious affairs of knightly aristocracy.
The wedding of Baron Gyfford Theren and Princess Majca appears consummated, the bride and groom having returned from their honeymoon some time ago. The household of Theren has adjusted to the presence of the barbaric Princess in their noble fold. Tutorage in etiquette has served Majca well. Information shared by the kitchen staff confirms she no longer slurps her soup directly from the bowl, but has instead taken up the spoon. The Ferdahl remains silent on the marriage, but an anonymous personal attendant went on record saying "Our Lady is pricked still by the presence of the Murderer's sister in Theren's family".
Theren continues to hold strategic council on what path best leads to victory against Lyras. To date, no mention has been made of Therengia siding with Lyras. Apparently the fickle breeze of Theren alliance still favors the sails of Ilithi, to which this reporter says, Amen!
In local society news, the injunction against the presence of the Mountain Elf, Xelten Tersin has been rescinded. Details are few on how this deal was brokered, but the speculation in the tavern circles is that Xelten has once again promised to behave. Betting has opened in the back room of the Hangman's Noose on how long that will last. Wagers should be placed soon however, as Xelten was recently involved in an altercation with Craxor shortly after the ban was lifted. Craxor's own erratic behavior in the past may be behind the wait and see position the Tower has taken on the matter.
When approached by the Enquirer for comment, Captain Herrick of the Mountain Queen's Guard, Guardian to Prince Fayne, had this to say: "Xelten who? Oh, that idiot. No comment."
The Court continues to sponsor and support the effort to boost morale in this dark time with a variety of activities. There are sparring nights, prediction seminars, distinguished lectures on magical theory, trading fairs for coin and card collectors, gala events, town hall meetings hosted by the militia, and commissioned books. Ilithi once more embraces the arts. Still, the South Bridge theater continues to gather dust. One has the sense that the Tower regrets investing in this forgotten and under-utilized project.
That is all for this month. Rest assured, this reporter and the meager resources of this publication will continue the dedicated effort to bring you all the news that is news.
This is Crystal City Karle saying untill next time!

Ilithian Enquirer number two
02/17/2010 09:26 PM CST
Greetings faithful readers, welcome to issue number two!
Ominous events, shady back-alley deals, momentous meetings, all the news in this province and beyond! Before we tackle these weighty headlines and more, we here at the Enquirer have a few thankyou’s to bestow.
First, a heart-felt thank you goes out to all the people who responded favorably to our first issue. Based on that response and our blooming readership, we have been able to move the production out of my mother’s root cellar and into our splendid new offices (Mama, if you are reading this, last month’s rent is on the way).
Second, we would like to thank our newest and most generous sponsor for their patronage, the Golden Phoenix Inn. In addition to sponsoring our intrepid publication, they have agreed to purchase a quantity of issues in advance to provide free of charge to all customers upon request. The proprietors of the Phoenix have also asked us to dispel the rumor that they routinely encourage their bartenders to mix in unspeakable and unwholesome extras to orders placed by Therengians. In truth, and we quote, “the bartenders are only nudged in this direction on a random and irregular schedule, far from routine. In addition, what the Golden Phoenix staff choose to add to the Therengian’s drink at the next table over during their off duty time is not the concern of management”. End of quote.
With those bits of housekeeping out of the way, on to the news!
** Lyras, Ender of Worlds, or Textbook Under-achiever with Self-Esteem Issues?
Lyras has been playing her cards close to her rotting breast, and for the moment her minions have been battled to a standstill, neither taking nor giving ground, with only occasional forays into the more populated areas in and around the city. Farmers and merchants would be wise to continue to travel the patrolled routes and stay within city walls when possible.
There have been rumors of a quiet council held between the erudite leaders of the Empath guild and the high holy muckity-mucks of the Cleric guild leadership. A strategy in the forming to defeat necromancy perhaps? No details have been forthcoming yet, but rest assured the Enquirer will continue to turn over stones, so return your eyes here for the breaking story.
** Meanne, Meanne, Coniving Queenie!
In local society news, everyone’s favorite fig eating - Gnome loving - thrall of Teiro is back in town, poking sticks at bears and jabbing at hornet nests. Meanne has returned. Readers may recall her as the former leader of the semi-secret semi-dangerous group of evil-doers known as the Sanguine Eye, or the Bloodshot Peepers in less generous circles. This shadowy organization has left it’s smudged fingerprint in many a backroom plot. When the Sanguine Eye stirs the pot, best review the soup ingredients.
Meanne is also renowned for her outrageous claim of shared blood with the line of the Ferdahls, and her failed bid to be named Ferdahl prior to Her Grace Aemmin ascending to the position. It is also widely reported that Meanne actively participated in the assassination of the Zoluren Princess Arilana, who was heavy with child no less. The trauma of the event caused Arilana to miscarry, and the daughter of Vorclaff was stillborn.
Suffice it to say, Meanne is no stranger to shadowy dealings and machinations, although since her return to this fair city she appears to be playing the part of earnest mediator. This reporter can only hope she comes to us with poison diluted and fangs pulled.
** Citizens Meet, and Meet… and Meet Some More
In other city news, the Tower recently hosted a town-hall forum to discuss the Inquisition here in Ilithi, and to dispel rumor and rampant speculation. Many local residents where under the mistaken impression that Khurek and the Inquisition had been sent packing from our province in the aftermath of the unsavory events befalling Cierzen, which of course is far from the truth. In point of fact, Guild mistress Sothavi quietly took up the burden of Inquisitional leadership in Ilithi, and progressed with her own discreet investigations.
Many diverse opinions were given air during the open meeting, with the preponderance of voices indicating a desire to have a local voice in the Inquisition. The methods of Zoluren were not welcome, and Ilithi can take care of things just fine. While tense, with loading of bows and hands to the hilts rattling scabbards at times, the meeting progressed with a modicum of civility and without a single death, a major feat with the wild and belligerent Craxor in attendance.
One curious aspect was not the voices heard, but the voices unheard. Bard Teamarie, a local and normally vocal personality was uncharacteristically silent. Court Advisor Leucius was also asked to give his opinion, but deferred saying he would make his thoughts known at the meeting close. Yet when the assembly drew to the finish, he neglected to speak. Curious indeed, if this reporter may editorialize a bit, very curious.
** Her Grace to Hold Audience!
Returning to other Tower news, the rumors of an Audience have been confirmed! Our Grace has announced she will be giving oration and lending her ear to a limited number of petitioners. While exciting to most and long awaited, this reporter cannot help but feel some trepidation over the Ferdahl’s mood. With undead clawing at our gates, bitter sniping at and among the Court, citizen unrest, all capped with the marriage of Baron Theren to the unwashed Outcast despite the objections of Our Beloved Ferdahl, Aemmin cannot be in generous spirit. Also in late developing news the current Ilithian court members have all had thier badges removed. The Audience should prove interesting indeed!
** Adan’f Unrest
In a disturbing twist, it is rumored the Adan’f are undergoing another power struggle among their ranks. Rumors from traders coming up from the south, and semi-coherent mumblings from captive rock trolls indicate that the Blood Dancer Iszanua is bidding for control. Any leader that is less about bringing murderous mayhem to our streets and more about doll making is a leader this reporter can get behind.
**Enquirer on the Scene: Therengia Pulls Troops
Recently this reporter traveled to the Court of Baron Gyfford, where he held audience, as usual filled with stuffy pomp and circumstance, then doused with a thorough measure of protocol. Throngs of citizens kneeling and genuflecting – damn the impartial press, it was plain amusing to behold! It seemed as if all of Theren knelt for the event, save the Baron himself. Apparently he saves his kneeling for when the Outcasts come calling.
Enough editorial, back to the report: In short, the Therengians were told that they needed to concentrate on fighting the undead at home, and the military units now needed Baronial Permission to leave the Province. Having seen a large portion of Theren’s military force traveling abroad since, one cannot help but speculate if this was just more typical Theren rhetoric – all blow and no go. At least one loyal soldier has taken the proclamation to heart. Good Knight Sebastiene was seen pacing about the keep in focused concentration. Speculation is he needed to use the bathroom but was unable to find the Baron’s representative to secure permission to relieve himself.
While covering the Baron’s audience, rumor reached this reporter that Princess Majca is most likely gravid. Some may find this a shocking development, but it really is to be expected, given the proficiency and skill of Outcast women in the area of breeding. I'm sure the Theren Keep will be awash with litters of Outcasts in short order.
** Zoluren
There is little to report from our nearest neighbor to the north. Princess Arilana is still sequestered away nursing her grief at the terrible death of Vorclaf, and little word comes from the Palace. It is worth noting that the Theregians are still milling about by the Keep like jackals. The official story is that they are there to help, yet it was noted at one of the recent temple orb charging events that Therengians were in short supply. That leads to speculation as to exactly what they wish to help with.
There has been little headway regarding Zoluren/Ilithian relations at a political level. The Keep is still refusing to see our ambassador, while this is seen as a disappointment it doesn't seem to be dulling Ilithi's intent to help Zoluren through the current crisis.
With that, we close our second issue. Once again many thanks to the readers who provided positive feedback on the first issue. The Enquirer also welcomes submissions, please feel free to contact us.
And remember the Golden Phoenix: Quality drinks and quality service. Our prices may be higher than the Noose, but you won’t go home with sticky boots and you won’t need an Empath to put your innards back together in the morning.
Crystal City Karle here again saying till next time.

Ilithian Enquirer Issue Three
06/01/2010 02:06 AM CDT
Ilithian Enquirer, Volume 1, Issue #3
Welcome readers, to the third edition of the Enquirer, your prestigious journal of almost-current events in Ilithi and beyond. We at the Enquirer are grateful for the continued support of our loyal readership. As always we endeavor to bring to bear the unflinching scrutiny of honest Elothean journalism on matters important to this great province, gathering the raw facts and the unvarnished truth for your discriminating consumption.

Lyras Destroyed!
Lyras has been defeated in a stunning show of Ilithian strength. A daring plan hatched and refined in the cavernous corridors of the Crossing Temple, carried out with great vigor by Ilithi's brave citizens, spelled final doom for the nefarious Necromancer. Of course credit must also be given to the various minor military contributions of the other lesser Provinces. The Enquirer has confirmed that Theren did in fact have a number of persons who were actually aiding in the battle. It is not clear yet whether this small group was a rogue unit acting independently, or whether the Baronial paperwork was completed and permissions slips arrived in time on the eve of war. Regardless, the Theren soldiers did in fact perform adequately in the heat of that momentous fight.
A number of platoons were organized, many brilliantly commanded by Ilithians, to attack Lyras and her generals on several different fronts. The fighting was fierce, with little time for reprieve. Many casualties were suffered, and the price of victory was high. Ilithi endured the loss of Amaldriel Anduwenahle, Handmaiden to the Ferdahl. She will be missed greatly by some, by others, not so much, yet none can doubt the pivotal role she played; may her spirit rest with peace in the knowledge of triumph.
The soldiers of Ilithi quickly shook off the brutal blow of the Handmaiden's death, rallying forth with fierce cries of "remember Amaldriel!", and "for the Lady!", and "when do we get paid!" Fighters swarmed Lyras like angry ants dismantling a beetle carcass. Swords flashed, spells flew, and odd people where throwing even odder concoctions.
A reporter on the ground witnessed Ilithi's own Gridaksma flinging a volley of mysterious "goo" upon Lyras, which noticeably impaired her ability to fight. Later interviews with several decorated scholars of the Moon Mage Guild did confirm the substance was indeed "goo", and that it was in fact "mysterious".
Malzard, Court Mage of Ilithi, struck the final momentous blow that felled the vile Necromancer, giving the single surviving empath Asrea the desperate chance needed to link with Lyras, completing the capstone of the Temple's plan to destroy the Great Evil for all time. Asrea is of course yet another of Ilithi's finest.
Free of the menace of Lyras, Theren was quick to announce a festival celebrating her demise. As one local citizen on the trade route put it, "Theren's a fitting host for a celebration. Given the restraint and conservation of effort that particular province displayed during the war, they should have ample resources available for a festival."
An Audience with Her Grace
Following the war's end, the Ferdahl held a long awaited audience, making a number of important announcements.
First, in laudable efforts to better police the borders, control the growth of necromancy, and stem the influx of troublesome riff-raff, a barricade along the trade route just before the north edge of the great Chasm will restrict the flow of traffic southward. All travelers will be stopped, but Ilithi Citizens with proper papers will pass freely onward to the gondola, while strangers lacking official identification must turn back. (Editor's Note: This pronouncement was later amended to expand free passage to Elves and Elotheans, following vocal complaints from both groups, the Mountain Elves in particular.)
In keeping with a more secure and glorious Ilithi, Her Grace decided to pull the old less-than-ambitious city guards off the streets and replace them with better trained, more alert sentinels. The Watchmen were reformed and stationed at the gates. Captain Cierzen was put in charge of the Militia, while Leucius was given the Handmaiden's duties as the head of the Court. The old practice of barring the gates at dusk was reinstated.
Several petitions were brought forth and heard during the audience. All were received with stately patience, but most failed to make their cases before the Lady. Uncouth Craxor spent most of the audience in jail, a direct result of his loud, tactless, often poorly thought out observations.
A brief time after the audience, the Tower Court held another public meeting, this time to announce Ilithi's own Inquisitional unit. Liurilias was introduced as the head of a team comprised initially of Dianelle the Healer; Bahbtahrol, ex-militia supply sergeant; Sir Hrethgar the Knight; and lastly, Raudun and Asurun, both wise scholars of the Moons. Sentinel Lyle was overheard to say, "Not a bad bunch, but what's up with the fat Gor'Tog? About all he'll chase down is his next meal. What's he going to accuse, a sausage?" It was also mentioned that the team had been working quietly for some time, identifying and eliminating necromancers in Ilithi. While all of this sounded good and made sense to this reporter personally, one has to wonder at how this common sense arrangement has expanded to the point where good citizens cannot take two steps without tripping over an inquisitor these days.
A New Figure in the Inquisition: With Friends Like These!
The days following the announcement of Ilithi's formal Inquisition Squad (Inquad for short) saw the arrival of a somber scar-faced Gor'Tog at the gates of our gleaming Crystal City. He was formally introduced as Inquisitor Vorasus, sent by the Crossing Temple to monitor and assist Shard, and by extension, Ilithi, in the drive to rout all corpse flayers.
In very short order Vorasus was dug in like a starving tick, building fortified "offices" to the west of Shard, very near the old rockslide along the western road leading to the wild Steppe. Not stopping there, the Inquisitor also sent out a call to the faithful, raising a small army of holy soldiers, which were initially stationed at the north and west bridges to help secure the city. This army however, we must nervously report, has now grown and spread throughout the major Shard precincts, beyond even the city walls. Zealous temple soldiers and Inquisition volunteers from all walks of life now patrol from Fayrin's rest in the north to the very Wall of Corik in the south.
Far be it for this reporter to question Vorasus the Great Examiner, far far FAR be it. However, other more curious and less prudent citizens may wonder aloud at the truly exponential growth of this standing army stamping across good Ilithi soil. Vorasus originally gave assurances that his company would remain outside the city walls, merely to search the countryside and wilderness for hidden evils, yet apparently "outside-the-city-walls" means something entirely different in the secret languages spoken among the holy Temple hallways.
Reports from the Tower, from Steel Claw Clan, and from far Horse Clan seemed to indicate that the local Inquisition had things well in hand prior to the arrival of the esteemed Gor'Tog Vorasus. With this drastic influx of pilgrims there is no shortage of interrogators, examiners, and rubberneckers, yet very few actual necromancers turning up. False accusations abound, and many a good citizen has been put to the rack. Of course we at the Enquirer would never suggest that the Inquisition has made mistakes, only that there is possibly, maybe, perhaps, however slight, a small indication that they have been at less than maximum rightness on numerous occasions. In fact, Healer Asrea was killed as a necromancer. Yes, the very same Asrea who played a key role in ending the threat of Lyras.
Captain Cierzen and Vorasus have also exchanged a number of heated words on several occasions, engaging in fierce debates over matters of jurisdiction, the proper role of proctorship, and the benefits of wool socks. The gentle city is once again in a state of high tension. One Tower official provided this quote, on the condition of anonymity: "Where in Asketi's dark and droopy drawers was all this help when Lyras was around! There's more of these damn inquisition jokers roaming our fields and streets than ever was them shambling undead horrors."
Silent Stalkers!
A rash of brutal abductions has recently popped up in the southern area of Shard. Victims taken have been found later badly beaten, left with severe wounds tainted with necromantic magics. So far there are no leads as to who or what may be perpetrating these crimes. In addition several of the inquisitor troops have been found with their throats slashed. Vorasus himself has even been killed. He was unable to describe the assailant. Citizens are urged to be especially careful when strolling through the south side of town and to keep their eyes open at all times.
Downsizing
In an official statement, the Tower has announced the newly restructured Court. In an effort to become smaller, more agile in meeting the needs of the province, this new Court has significantly fewer positions than the old. Less than shocking, Malzard and Liurilias were re-appointed to their old roles as Court Mage and Cleric respectively. More surprising was Sendithu, who was given the role as sole Ambassador. It is unclear why she was chosen, given her unassuming and soft spoken nature. Her reserved manor is a departure from a number of her more gregarious predecessors. Still, she certainly is a step up from a certain former Ambassador to the island state of Qi (She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named). Court Advisor Leucius certainly appears sold, and has been publically backing Sendithu's appointment. Sadly, no other former court members made it back. Many experts feel the theatrics and drama surrounding the previous Court, coupled by a marked lack of effort in key areas forced the Ferdahl to her decision on this matter. The positions of Court Bard and Historian remain unfilled, with no word on whether interviews will be given in the near future.
The Militia has also undergone a restructuring. Court Advisor Leucius held interviews with a number of citizens. The Enquirer has learned that the interviews are over and the final decisions are being weighed by the tower. Observers have noted that many former members of the militia appear to be getting antsy to hear what the final verdict might be.
Yellow and Jade? Or Yellowed and Jaded?
In society news from Zoluren, the Princess sponsored another one of her highly questionable color-theme balls, this time yellow and jade. A more fitting title would perhaps be the Pineapple Gala. Attendees reported the event went smoothly. Our Grace the Ferdahl attended but was in poor spirits due to the recent loss of Amaldriel. The Baron of Theren also deigned to visit, alone, unaccompanied by his unschooled Outcast wife. Sources in Therenborough tell us she was left home this trip. Despite significant efforts from the Baron's staff to make Macja more publically palatable, a snag occurred during a recent visit to Dunshade manor. The exact nature of the snafu has kept very hush-hush, but the Enquirer has uncovered a factual rumor that the Baroness was observing the Lord Isleif's hunting dogs just prior to feeding time. When Dunshade's kenneler tossed the hounds a juicy flank steak, the Lady assumed it was a banquet. A brief tussle ensued between the Outcast and a fine red retriever before the two were separated. Macja retained the steak, and the dog was treated for numerous bites and scratches.
The Local Arts
Ilithi's third official play (the second to be directed by Rainea) has been announced with great fanfare, and opening night fast approaches. We are told it is a comedy written by Court Advisor Leucius. A comedy written by a paladin? Bring a pillow and a good book, suggests this skeptical reporter. Rumor has it that this play is being touted as a flashy spectacle extraordinaire, with a number of dignitaries from abroad slated to attend. One hopes that with all the publicity and hype surrounding this production, it will somehow manage to deliver on its promise. The pressure to meet expectations must be staggering for Advisor Leucius and the Shard Prairie Players theater troupe.
Retraction: Regretfully, last issue we reported in error that Baroness Macja was pregnant. The Enquirer has since learned that Macja is in fact NOT with child. She has merely gained a large amount of weight.

Ilithian Enquirer Volume 4
06/08/2011 12:37 PM CDT
After a short hiatus, we are back in the business of bringing you the nitty and gritty of all the news. The previous editor had an unfortunate accident that involved a hoof pick, ink and a pomegranate. Suffice to say it wasn't pretty.
**And You Said It Couldn't Happen!
On the local scene the big news was a Dragon! Yes, that's right, a dragon.
More on that later. At a recent audience, many items made the agenda. First up, several court positions were filled, led by Ambassador (Synamon), Court Cleric (Arourra) and the surprise appointment of a new Commander (Traim). These appointments came with the normal amount of applause and tears that typically accompany such.
On review of this editor's opinion: it seems a curious lot. The Ambassador seems nice enough but one has to wonder how seriously other provinces will take any official walking about with a rope hanging off their backside. Traim also seems capable, but questions of who is this fellow and murmurings of Sorcery came to the forefront almost immediately. I mean, have you seen his tattoos? And of course, Arourra. Though her past brings along its share of whispering and side-glances, I have to say her memorial for Kukalakai brought tears to my eyes. However the formal meet and great with our former Ambassador and it's mate that followed seemed highly questionable. We will have to see what else comes of this one.
**What The Heck Was That?
We were told of some newly discovered dangers to the north. Strange critters that folks knew little about were floating about up past the gondola. Parties were sent to investigate and came back with stories of unknown creatures and strange happenings. It's recommended that citizens not tarry in that general area. Not that there is much up there to tarry about for anyhow.
**Old Friends and Lovers
Next up, followed a report that the Adanf have been stirring again. After several skirmishes reaching into the city, the official word is that curiously, the Adanf have been talking about finding or fighting a Paladin. While the truth behind these motivations remains unclear, speculation is they caught sight of Uthgaar in one of his dresses. Those ankles would incite anyone to anger. In a turn of good events, Ilithi has chosen to strike back against the Adanf. In a recent foray alone, over 1,000 were killed with no casualties on the Ilithian side and all paladins accounted for. Hundreds of spare Adanf parts were then dumped upon their altar and the warning was made that more of that was to come if they continued their aggressions. More on this story as it unfolds as the Adanf have never been known for their cognitive powers and discretion.
**Who Is That Masked Man?
Then, just as things were winding down there was the surprise appearance of a Dragon Priest envoy. No small matter here, gentle readers. In all its glory, Prime Intercessor Valthyrz arrived to ask for a meeting between the new Dragon Priest leader and her Grace to discuss a possible truce. A possible truce? Crazy, I know. The offer was made for a meeting place in an open-air spot of Ilithi's choosing. It was a curious request, since when do Dragon Priests sunbathe? But all was handled well by the new and slightly frazzled Ambassador.
Let me interject some clarification here for the two possible people not in the know. There was much discourse on the reasoning for agreeing to a meeting. For some reason, many folks (mostly of northern persuasion, I may add) had strong opinions of her choice to listen to the Dragon Priest spiel. If they were currently the threat they had been in the past there might be an issue, but the simple reality of current events is that they are no longer the force that they were. The last time there was any real threat was before the Crusade. You remember the Crusade, don't you? Specifically - the one that ended with joint forces crushing the hapless Dragon Priests and picnicking in their precious Spire. That was one mean potato salad. In the time since then their forces have basically become a fodder for Ilithi's adventuring class, serving as nothing but daily training exercises for most. Chatting with the leader of a defeated enemy seems a small thing, especially when compared to other provinces who believe in going to bed with their enemies.
**It's My Party, And I'll Fly If I Want To.
On the appointed day, many Ilithians were gathered in anticipation of the meeting. Even more were peering via moon mage magic. So all eyes were watching expectantly when the new leader swooped in. Yes, that's right, gentle reader, swooped as in flew. Much to everyone's astonishment the new Dragon Priest leader is an actual dragon. Huge and fearsome to behold, most people just stood about all agape. (For the barbarians being read this article, agape means mouth wide open.) He declared his name was Ael'tharaxus and he waited patiently for Our Grace to arrive, largely ignoring the rabble. Our Grace arrived shortly thereafter and stood proud and unflinching in front of the dragon. She allowed him to present his opening line about a truce before refusing it. She pointed out the deeds of their past, their dealings with Sorcery and necromancy and that there should be no trust between either party. The dragon countered that the old ways would be purged and intimated that Ilithi had its own secrets. Our Grace responded that if their efforts to purge themselves of the evil within proved to be true. she would look at the situation more favorably. She agreed to allow them to send an emissary and that concluded the meeting. As of yet we have not received word of an emissary arriving. You will be the first to know.
**Puce Is This Year's Black.
Moving onto more current news. Things in Ilithi move along swimmingly. The appointing of Ruea as Court Bard has lead to a renaissance of arts and entertainment in Ilithi. After years of sitting silent and empty, the Theater has seen multiple productions. News on the Ball scene is that two have been held and more are on the way, not one will have the ghastly requirement of odd colors that Zoluren has now made famous. Past themes were moon mage flavored and a genuine costume ball. There are rumors of another being co-hosted by the Order of White Rose that is around the corner. All this talk of Provincial Balls brings to mind a question once voiced by Sister Vethine. Why doesn't Therengia have Balls? Sister, that's something I've been wondering about for years.
**An Odd Fellow, a Rose and A Thorn.
In other local news, a fellow by the name of Neclore has been strolling about Ilithi talking poorly about Therengia. (I think I might like this guy!) He's been seen chatting with a local by the name of Belphobe. As an aside, I feel it necessary to mention that Belphobe is currently the crowned Rose of Therengia and has moved down south. In what is probably sheer coincidence, her moving coincided with Craxors decision to ship himself off North. With a trade of personalities like that I'm not surprised Therengia hasn't straight up declared war on us. Anyway, rumors from the north are that Neclore is stirring up trouble in Therengia. It seems this odd but insightful fellow might be someone to watch.
Onto news outside Ilithi. Not that much is newsworthy outside Ilithi.
**No News Isn't Always Good News
Things in Zoluren remain mostly quiet. The Princess remains hidden away in the Keep with very little activity with anyone outside. The militias have been disbanded and the Province has turned mostly lawless. Necromancers and such can be heard chatting on the gweths with little repercussion. Once in a great while, General Zulkirs comes out and arbitrarily hollers at someone, but for the most part all one hears from Zoluren is silence. On a positive note, the Order of White Rose has taken up the mantle of public service and offer regular Town meetings. A valiant effort in what has become a province where most anything goes. With the weakening of the Zoluren hierarchy, it is more important than ever that Ilithi supports Zoluren. Fortunately those efforts seem to be doing well. Recently, when Zoluren was attacked by a horde of undead, newly appointed Commander Traim and Ilithian forces were seen standing strong at the gates to The Crossing repelling the invaders.
**Turning Tides and a Curious Shortage of Sugar.
Things in Therengia however, are never usually quiet. They recently had a couple new appointments of their own, Marsais was appointed to the position of High Commander. In our brief dealings with him, I can safely say he's one of the few Therengians deserving of such a role. They also appointed Valkri, formerly of Ilithi and someone with a notorious history of dislike for the Outcasts (ranking her high in my book) as their new Court Advisor. From the outside looking in, it is a curious move appointing someone with such vocal feelings to a position traditionally held by only the best yes men Therengia had to offer. The Baron, who was recently seen touring the festival grounds, spoke of peace and goodwill. Typical drivel that means nothing as long as the Outcast shares his throne. Speaking of the Baroness, she was not with him on his tour of the fairgrounds. In fact she hasn't been publicly seen in over a year now. Rumors persist that all efforts to make her presentable on an official level have failed miserably. We here at the Enquirer have sources from the keep itself that say the Baron has locked her away in a lavish upper chamber of the keep. Servants pass by and slide large platters of sweets through the door and dash off before losing digits to the voracious appetite of the Baroness. It's said that if you stay real quiet at night you can hear the shriek of "more Cheesecake" from the upper levels of the keep.
**And In Sport News…
Yes, there is actually sport news, the Elanthics have wrapped up in Therengia. It comes as no surprise that Ilithi came through in first place. Much Kudos goes to LT Taleek for his organizing of team Ilithi. The Fervid Shade (well known for their brawn), came in a close second but got stymied by the inclusion of events that required actual thought to do well in. Third place went to the Theren Guard who were also the hosts of the games. It was a grand effort by a group that was kept quite busy during the proceedings. All reports are that the games were well received and we must begrudgingly congratulate Therengia for hosting such a competition.
News from the Islands and the Dwarven lands is that we are relatively sure they are still there.
That will do it for this issue, see you all next time! And, remember, wash your whites separate from your leathers for best results.
