Altering question - 06/18/2010 12:06 AM CDT
Sorry if this is a dead horse, couldn't find any information on it and rather than waste someone's time ingame by going through the steps, thought I'd ask here...

When altering armor, particularly leathers, are you allowed to change the material the leathers? And if so, can they be changed to something that's limited or nonexistant in terms of material that leathers are normally made from? e.g. Germish'din hide, rabbit fur, basilisk hide, dyrachis (hide, pelt...)?

And if no to the above questions, what if your armor was previously dyed? Can you at least include it's original material in the alteration name?

>When altering armor, particularly leathers,

Generally speaking, changing material, as long as it's not on the restricted list (hiro bear, etc.) is done all the time.

I can't see any reason you'd have issues.

Thanks very much for the reply. I just thought I'd be sure since some people have given mixed responses ingame.

In continuation to my last question (sorry!) - When you alter armor, is there any flexibility as to what the armor 'appears' as? I've been told that generally a hauberk is a hauberk and a coat is a coat, but what if armor is simply referred to as "leathers" or "some chain"?

Was wondering if altering leathers into something such as [reinforced or not] leather armor, dress, tunic, or gambeson would be allowed? I've asked a few folk ingame and gotten varying replies so thought I'd confirm here.

Armor cannot be made to look like clothing.

But you can usually get the noun changed if they're similiar enough (mallet to maul, leathers to leather armor, etc.).

That what you mean?

depends on the alterer, and item, maybe some RP
i've had 'some chain' made into 'chain armor' before.
the merchant might not want to do it, usually its best not to argue with them on those of things.

if you wanted to though, you could argue on something a hauberk you could just split it at the bottom and add leg straps to make it into armor or chain. You might even get an alterer that would agree with you, but maybe didn't have the tools to do that kind of work.
For something like that you might want to seek out an alterer that works specifically in armor(or leather/skinned parts), or one of the ones that seem to do just about everything(like the turnip lady)

Hmm, alright.

To clarify if I may, it's the 900TDP alterer - So I'm completely unsure as to what limits there may be.

Regarding the "looking like clothing" ordeal, that is in fact why I'm a bit torn. Because the game actually -does- have leather shirt, tunic, robe, coat, gambeson. In spite of this, they'd be disallowed for sure?

With alteration scrolls you can try and the worst that can happen is they say no and you design something else.

From the play.net alteration guide at http://www.play.net/dr/info/alteration.asp

"Armor cannot be converted into clothes. Simply put, armor is armor and should look heavy enough to do its job. You cannot alter a suit of chainmail into a dress (or vice versa)."
