Consent from Stealing and PvP Open 10/03/2016 12:55 AM CDT
I was recently stolen from and accused the person to the town guards after he ran off.

I find him at the bank and ask for him to return the money. He gloats, and says too late, now that I've accused him to the guards I forfeit my consent and if I want anymore to do with him I have to accept his warning for combat. He issues the warning then hides away in the Bard's guild behind the portal (probably had an alt to escort him to do so this quickly, I speculate its the same player behind the bard that has been harassing and killing novices in hogs)

1) Does this makes sense? If he is PvP Open does it not mean my consent on him is irrelevant, HE forfeited his policy defense and I can hire a bounty hunter or whatnot as I please to handle the situation (no spouse or whatever complex consent policies involved)

This information is especially important for non-combat guilds.

2) Is it reportable or mech abuse to hide in an inaccessible safe room immediately after he's locked PvP open and ran off with the money?

3) For practical purposes, if I'm not interested in his death, just the money back, am I stuck? Since continued killing him translates to harassment and he really has no incentive to return the theft.

This is correct. While you can't kill him infinity times (IIRC that is when it enters harassment), the fact that you accused him successfully doesn't mean you lack consent, since he's open anyway.

Yes.

Pretty much.

Uzmam! The Chairman will NOT be pleased to know you're trying to build outside of approved zones. I'd hate for you to be charged the taxes needed to have this place re-zoned. Head for the manor if you're feeling creative.

If you go after him, you're just feeding his RP. Chalk it up as a loss, be careful with coin, and move on.

IIRC, If he's not a bard, it's mech abuse. If he is a bard, he can lose guild privileges.

Report him for mech abuse.

I thought you got your coins returned to you automatically when you successfully accused a player after catching them, and they accrued debt for the same amount. At least that's how it worked when I would get caught/accused.

I seem to remember reading about that somewhere, too.

The messaging I got from accusing was just that the guard said thanks for the report, we will put a warrant on this guy.

Elanthipedia makes no mention of the funds returning mechanic either.

Either that feature never was, got removed, or maybe game mech was considering my report to be of his theft on another person and not mine. (there were also other people in the room)

You're thinking of necromancy accusing which pays you a bit and deducts funds from the necromancer's account.

No, there was definitely a mechanic that returned a victim's stolen money to them when they successfully accused someone they caught stealing from them. That amount was then added to the thief's debt. I've had it happen to my thief on more than one occasion, but that was a year or more ago. My guess is that it stopped working, or as quietly killed, when all the different theft charges (felony stealing, pilfering, shoplifting) were changed to use the same charge for everything. Or, maybe when Raesh was changing how fines were calculated awhile back. Either way, it was a thing at one point and I don't think it would be a bad thing to bring it back.

Is it mech abuse if a thief steals from you and hides in the thief guild?

Thanks for being in my corner Solomon, come back soon.

I believe The Bard Guild has a mechanic that will kick bards out of the private areas if they're engaging in active PvP type things (like stealing from players). Using a bard alt to escort someone in circumvents that mechanic and is where the mech abuse comes from.

I could be wrong, but that's my understanding of it.

In 2006 or so, I had a thief receive a warning for doing just that. Stole from a moon mage. Got caught. The moon mage chased me. I went to the haven guild. Parked there for an hour, and then logged out. I came back to an angry GM telling me that I was getting a warning.
