I think people get bored of training and raising skills because this game is not about raising skills and gaining levels. This is (or pretends, aspires, hopes) a role playing game.

Foraging branches and carving canes (repeat 50 times) can be as boring as History of Magic at Hogwarts. The only way to make that time passable is by being with someone and talking, teaching and interacting while doing any of the above mentioned activities (the reason Harry and Ron usually make their plans and have their conversations during that class, while Hermione takes notes).

If I measure the quality of my time in DR in terms of how many ranks or levels I was able to raise, I will get progresively more and more bored. If I measure the quality in terms of the jokes, songs, gossip and or confrontations I had with other characters I usually keep feeling more and more interested in the game.
