When I cut the mallet I get the result:
cut mallet with bonesaw
Back and forth you saw an iron bonesaw across the mallet's bones. Your experience in carving bone is beginning to show in the design.

When you have finished working you determine the mallet are uneven.
Roundtime: 13 sec.

You analyze the mallet and learn more about its construction.
When crafting is complete this will be a type of finished bone blunt weapon.
The mallet requires additional cuts with a bonesaw in order to fit together properly.
From the progress so far, it looks like the mallet is finely-crafted.
Roundtime: 6 sec.

So the analysis is wrong it should need to be scraped with a rasp before cutting with the bonesaw again.

Another error is this:

analyze mallet

You do not see anything that would prevent carving the mallet further.
From the progress so far, it looks like the mallet is riddled with mistakes and practically worthless.

You cannot figure out how to do that. Perhaps finding suitable ingredients and studying some instructions would help.

According to instructions you only need riffler set, rasp and polish. No chiseling is required for weapons.

Bone carving uses a bonesaw and not chisels. It just seemed like one too many tools to require chisels as well. What seems to be confusing everyone is the ANALYZE message indicating you need to CUT it with the bonesaw, when you really need to do something else.

Strange, I was able to carve a bone toe-ring using chisels when it was first released. Doesn't seem possible anymore.
