Re: Boat Travel Times 10/07/2010 12:40 PM CDT
I'd go to the islands more if it was a bit easier / quicker. It really does suck to have to mark off a couple hours just for travel to go to one of the islands. There are places I'd really like to visit, but take way too long to get there. I don't mind some time, not everything needs a skill based shortcut, but what we have really does seem harsh. If we're going for immersion, realism (within limits), let's take it the next step. If Elanthia weren't restrained by what the GM's can/are willing to code, some group of moon mages, maybe with trader backing, would've set up a quicker more reliable travel system than the boats. Supply and demand. You have a group of relatively wealthy individuals wanting more rapid transport, someone would've provided it for the proper fee. Put in something like that if the current boat travel schedule is viewed as a plus by many of the people.

The interesting part is that even without Shift Moonbeam, Moon Mages have the tools to provide this service themselves if there actually was enough of an incentive to do so.

Though as the PHA has found out, many people have very funny ideas about the value of another person's time.

What Armifer said.

I could stroll into Crossing, open a gate to Ratha and leave it there for the next 10 hours if I felt compelled to do so.

Nobody has ever made a serious offer at making that worth my time.

Have an AIM? I'll pay 100 plat round trip if there are Moon Mages available whenever I need to make the mainland trip.

Since Annwyl killed the other thread, I'm moving this here.

>I kind of get the feeling the people who think it's good to have a boat system like that are the ones who never really have to use it. The people who go to and from the islands often notice it a lot more.

I'm in the opposite camp. I'm so used to using my moon mage for travel that my mind is blown by how bad boats to the island are. I really feel like the moon mage advantage here is unfair given how bad the public transport is. Player-owned boats are a much better balance.

>going from crossing to theren without touching the ferry/barge in under 2 min.

Considering you're going to spend about 90 seconds just crossing the rope by sky giants, no. I get the point you're making, but I don't think this thread needs exaggeration.

>DR4LyfeYO

Actually, forget I even said anything.

By the way, I really disagree that P5 is unreasonable to get to, although I would like to see a northern passage opened up.

I don't think it's unfair because there are limits on that also, not many but some.

The big issue isn't just the time on the boat, it's that they don't know when the boat will actually be at the dock. I don't think people would mind sitting on a boat for 20-30 minutes one way if they knew that's all it would be. Ratha has two boats going to it, Aesry one, M'riss one, Hara none. The boats are constantly late and the M'riss boat doesn't even have a scheduled docking time to be late for so it can show up whenever the hell it wants. There really needs to be two boats for each island on opposite docks so there's always one coming to you. The players would have to pay to use the service, a fee of 10-20 plat each way, for "boat upkeep, crew pay and defense against pirates" and people would pay it.

Just an idea..

Bribe the boat people?
>go ferry 20 plat
Then the ferry guy takes the tip and based on whatever calcs deemed necessary will influence the travel time.

This is a good idea.

^This. Travel time I, personally, don't care about. The fact that the boats don't keep to a schedule is endlessly annoying, though.

the "boat" service in TF that the people set up to make going to the islands less painful was a wonderful idea. Unfortunately, the usage of a "boat bot" to benefit the population in prime has been nay-sayed by the powers that be.

Heh, who said it had to be a boat bot? Gettin close to fest time, whats stoppin a boat owner from standing on docks and gwething, 50 plat per one way trip. Leaving in 15 roisaen! Meet at such and such dock! Ships name is, such and such, there is a guard at the ramp, gweth me upon arrival for the trip!

Once boarded, they hand the captain 50 plat, they are all good. If they refuse to pay, escort them off the ship.

I don't see whats stoppin people now from doing that? It really don't have to be a bot. As long as your at the keyboard, get some teaching in on the trip, etc etc. Your all set!!!

I think fixing and releasing player owned boats again would be infinitely better than allowing bots.

I was so sad when I came back to DR, read about player owned boats, went to go empty my (in game) bank account on one, and found out they were no longer there and the only way to get one was to empty my (real life) bank account.

I saw someone selling one on one of the sales lists for $1,000 and I lol'd, then cried a little on the inside.

Yeah, it's funny... but it's not funny when you want a boat.

For any that know me, I spend most of my time on Ratha. Unless I'm hunting, sometimes even when I am hunting, I am generally willing to open a gate to crossings for folk. Catch me on the gweths, if I'm not in range use the ring
