Friendly reminder! Post vs. Reply 08/21/2011 12:12 PM CDT
Howdy everybody!

Just reminding everyone about the difference between Post and Reply.

Before the new Threaded forums view, the difference wasn't really an issue because no one could tell which you had done. Now, however, it is immediately obvious. Even if you aren't using Threaded view it still registers as though you were, making for some very hard to follow threads, threads being lost, and/or cluttered up conversations.

If you are responding to someone, please use Reply. It is located in the top right corner of the message you are replying to. Forum etiquette is to not change the subject name when doing so. This allows all conversation on the same topic to be located in a single thread and not spread out over multiple threads like if you had used Post instead. Admittedly, this faux pas has only happened a handful of times. However...

If you are starting a brand new conversation or want to take the conversation in a new direction, please use Post. It is located at the top of the page just above the list of posts or threads. If you instead use Reply and simply change the subject line, those of us using Threaded view cannot separate it from the thread you Replied from and your post is likely to get lost in the shuffle. Even if you're just going on a tangent that sprung from the original topic, please use Post to start a new thread. It is hard to follow multiple topics within a single thread.

Even if you don't use Threaded View, please, please take this into consideration as it not only helps those of us who use Threaded view, it makes your posts more likely to not get lost in the shuffle and more likely to be responded to.

I know that the changes to the forums will require a period of growing pains, so hopefully this post will help make it shorter.
