Trying to choose a name 09/10/2017 04:10 PM CDT

Hello! I'm a new guy on the block and have been trying to choose a name and have found that I can't even make a name for myself. A bit of a bummer (but understandable with how long this game has been running), but I was hoping someone could help me out on this. I've even tried just randomly typing letters on the keyboard to see if I could come up with something and even those were supposedly taken?? o.O

I've found the best way to come up with a good sounding name that the character manager will accept is to use a name generator and/or take part of one generated name and combine it with another. The character manager has a built-in name generator as well. Last I checked I wasn't real impressed by the names the ingame generator generated but you can easily combine aspects of the generated names for your own.

Elanthipedia is the Dragonrealms wiki. If you take a look at the languages page for the race you plan on rolling you can get a feel for how your name would sound based on the dictionary listing and choose something similar or use an existing word from the dictionaries with a slight modification to it so you aren't walking around as 'apple tree' the paladin. Example: the Ilithic (Elven) word for 'apple tree' is almalne. If you were rolling an Elf you could probably choose Almalnen or Alumalned.

Don't choose a name that starts with the letters 'My'. The parser interacts with 'My-names' horrendously.

If you choose a long name people will probably shorten it as a nickname so choose something that doesn't end up in a terrible nickname for you.

If you choose a name that requires finger gymnastics to type it's going to result in a lot of people mistyping your name.

Keep in mind that naming conventions in the west have been inherited from latin and greek. If your character is male, choosing a name that ends in a consonant is going to sound more masculine to most people. Choosing a name that ends in a vowel, especially 'ia' tends to sound more feminine. Depending on how you want to portray your character this is important. Your name will be a facet of your character that people will interact with most.

Exactly what syntax are you using to choose a name?

Last year, we had a player who thought every name he tried was taken, but it turned out to be a syntax issue: http://forums.play.net/forums/DragonRealms/Discussions%20with%20DragonRealms%20Staff%20and%20Players/General%20Discussions/view/12708

The naming instructions say:
CHOOSE (name) to choose your character's name.

This player was typing the parentheses, which the Character Manager won't accept as a valid name. (It accepts only letters, not punctuation marks, numbers, or spaces.)

So you should be typing CHOOSE Firstname, not CHOOSE (Firstname).

I had to try this out... surely the game messaging wouldn't be ambiguous.

Turns out that not only is the messaging ambiguous, there are also no examples or any indication of which characters are permitted.

What really bugged me is that the name generator suggested a name I liked, then wouldn't let me use. I can guess why this happens, but it's annoying as hell.

>choose suggest
Generating name suggestions...
Here are some name suggestions: Ergus, Brundtartiel, Lem, Quazotwill, Azilia, Fleacikeie, Ophe, Idnozaq, Ipocor, Dorkarver

>choose Ophe
Avoid using words like (prophet) when choosing your name.

What would you like to name your character? If you are having trouble choosing a name you can CHOOSE SUGGEST to get some name suggestions.
