issue with SF and Chrome 05/08/2013 11:21 AM CDT
I'm having a problem getting SF to open when i'm using Chrome. How do I get SF to open properly?

The only thing that happens is at the bottom of the screen a download bar pops up with a file called the charactername.sal and that's it. the FE doesn't load up or anything else. What settings do I need to change and where are those settings located?

i think if you right click on the download bar at the bottom and set it to always open files of this type it should work

nope, nothin. and if I left click it, a critical error message box pops up saying "Error loading skin from [storm.skin]"

After just testing this one out..

Chrome:
*Make sure your downloaded .sal files are not going to pile up somewhere and never get deleted.
On the right next to your address or URL bar, click on the three lines. Click on Settings. Scroll down to the blue link "Show advanced settings..." Click it. Scroll down to Downloads section. Make sure your downloads are going where you want them.

*Go to play.net/dr
Log in as if you're going to play from StormFront, on the bottom when it pops up to show you the download, look on the left where it says yourCharacter.sal or whatever. A small rectangle shows up just next to that, click on it and click on the option Always open files of this type.

Now click Back to return to character and Front End selection. Click play and StormFront should open up.

ok..confused. I mean, I found everything yer saying here, but why do I want to change where ALL my downloads go, just for SF? Or is it just for the page you clicked the settings for? it's not really clear to me. Secondly, Where do I want my downloads to go? To whichever folder StormFront is in?

I'm having the same problem with Sortny, because her files are numerous. A file gets created every time you login to the game. I manually type in the log number. Example: Sortny (nnn). The logs don't go past 99. Your charactername pops up but you need to put the log number next to it just like in the example. Remember to put a space between your charactername and the first parenthesis.

It won't let you specify that way(to put downloads for sf somewhere different) but i recommend using someing like your desktop for all downloads anyway so that you know where they are and you can see how many pile up. I mostly mentioned this step so that you get a chance to see where those .sal files are going.

alright. well. whatever I have done or not done all I am getting now is the critical error box that states "Error loading skin from [storm.skn]"

the charactername.sal dialogue box in the lower left no longer shows up, so I can't choose "always open this type of file" however I have tried that in the past and it didn't do anything anyways. The critical error box always shows up and that's that.

I can use IE to login and load up SF, but I'm just trying to use one browser to do this. Chrome has been good so far, so i'll stick with it since youtube videos don't crash constantly and/or tell me I need to update my freakin adobe flash player like IE does.

You could give the SGE a try and decouple loging in from the browser:
http://www.play.net/dr/play/sge-info.asp

That's been working great for me.

If you're getting the critical error each time, I'm going to suggest that you uninstall StormFront and install it fresh. It's likely the file got corrupted/lost/moved somehow.

I get this too, but easy fix. When it goes to 99 and brings up that window to save, I just exit. Then go into that download folder and delete all 99 of those "abison" files. Then it doesn't happen again until another 99 logins. And you do not lose info by doing this.

alright, so, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program, but it still won't work right on Chrome. I'm not getting the critical error box right now, but instead i'm getting an "application error" box because it's apparently trying to open the .sal file off the desktop where it's downloaded to and that isn't where the StormFront program is run from. grrr.

also, now the SGE is screwing things up because while using IE instead of accessing the StormFront program directly like it used to do, it's trying to go through the SGE. talk about frustrating. All I wanted was to be able to open SF from Chrome without having to use IE at all :(

Right click the sal file and choose "Open With." Assign SF as the default program for the .sal extension. The reinstall should have cleared up the corrupt file issue you were previously having.

oddly enough...SF is no longer an option for that (it used to be prior to reinstalling it) Just the SGE launcher shows up in the list of files/programs to use, however it seems to have worked for now. finally.

If you're still having issues with it after this, I'll try to catch you in game and we'll walk through some stuff that way. :)
