Dragonrealms Prime: Free To Play questions 04/10/2015 11:11 PM CDT

First of all...wow! Glad to be back finally...I've been gone for a LOOOOONG time, but F2P DR is more than enough to get me back.

So, what are the limitations to a F2P account?

Is there a post anywhere with the information? I searched but couldn't find one.

OK, I just learned about the first limitations to the F2P accounts: You are not allowed to be a Trader, Empath or Necromancer. Boooo!

I wonder what other hidden limitations I'll find.

Any idea folks?

Thanks,

OK, so you can't teach classes, no moneybelts, limited if any teleporting (which I'm guessing makes being a MoonMage rather pointless especially considering the travel restrictions) and other things.

Hrmmmmmmmm. I've played before as a Barbarian, Ranger, Thief, Trader, Warrior Mage, Empath and had minor characters as a Cleric, MoonMage and Paladin.

I suppose I could try to play again as a Paladin.

What does everyone think is a good guild for a F2P player considering the limitations?

Thanks for the help.

Any, even Moon Mage, which people are weirdly treating like lepers in f2p, which is crazy. My longest-running character (not highest level, but most hours played and over the longest span of time) was a Moonie, and over his lifetime I'd be willing to bet that upwards of 90% of his moongates/teleports were within province. Also, it isn't that freebs can't leave Zoluren, you just need to get a passport, which are literally like $5 for a 3-month pass, or in other words, virtually no money at all.

Just go with the guild you want to play. I'm currently a freeb Bard and having a freaking blast.

Thanks. It's funny. I was a trader for 7 years during my first incarnation, and surprisingly enough I actually wanted to return being a trader to find out if they ever got personal caravans and if they turned out any good. I also played a Ranger for that time as well, and a very quirky barbarian, a studious Warrior Mage and a nasty thief.

I dabbled as an Empath, Cleric, Moon Mage and Paladin. Bards never appealed to me, and still don't really.

I think I'll give Moon Mage a try...worth learning more about the guild.

Thanks again. Now, if they took Paypal as payment THEN all would be right in the world if I ever needed to purchase a passport, etc.

Thanks Absolon. I hadn't switched to threaded view in the forums so I couldn't see the replies.

Got it now.

Those are some substantial limitations, but I think I can work with them....after all free is FREE. :) Better than the $40/month I was paying back in the day during my first incarnations.

The significant limitation on the teleportation, travel, and storage abilities that Moon Mages have makes some people think they're not worth playing as a f2p player. Moon Mages do have other abilities, but the above ones are typically seen as the marquee ones for the guild because of their uniqueness and utility. It probably doesn't help those people's opinions that almost all of the other things a Moon Mage can do can also be done by any other guild. E.g. Without teleportation and storage, there's not a heck of a lot of difference between a Warrior Mage and a Moon Mage except for theme, and WMs are far better at combat so might as well go with that instead.

I don't necessarily agree with that sentiment entirely, but I can see where it would be coming from.

Oh, and just to clarify... f2p Moon Mage players themselves are not being treated as lepers by other players in case that's what was coming across in their statement. It was just commenting on guild selection.

Is it really a significant limitation? (serious question, I don't know). I thought your teleport/gate/travel spells will work so long as you have the passport, which is frankly very cheap. If you're going full F2P then the spells don't matter anyway, but teleportation spells like contingency are amazing.

The only big drawback in my mind is the lack of shadow servant. They should unlock that spell if you purchase vault access.

The Astral Plane will never work for a f2p Moon Mage, no matter how many passports you buy. A good chunk of the effectiveness of Moongate and Teleport is lost without that tie-in (and I don't mean using them to enter the astral plane.)

Are you basing that on astral guides not working? Because otherwise, I don't see anything saying this on the elanthipedia page.

You need to access the astral plane by using an astral guide during the quest to unlock it the ability. Ergo, no astral plane ability.

I find it plausible that that astral guide plays by different rules, and is possibly not implemented as an astral guide.

<<I find it plausible that that astral guide plays by different rules, and is possibly not implemented as an astral guide.

It can be passed on to other players who can then make use of it exactly like they would with any other astral guide. E.g. this quest astral guide is the only way for Bards to reach one of their evokes. It focuses exactly like a normal astral guide, comes with charges like a normal astral guide, and can even fail to work if you don't have enough skill exactly like with any other astral guide.

I.e. I am willing to bet that it is actually an astral guide, and not some quest-wonkery made to emulate one.

Well, yes, having Moon Mages able to bypass passports and store 100s of items in their Shadow Servant would rather defeat the purpose of many F2P limitations.

Before and after you have the skill to dependably travel astrally it is easy to lock astrology through prediction. Astral travel is just the lazy way to move it.

Were I considering F2P I probably wouldn't roll a moon mage. You can enjoy the toys another guild has and a good chunk of what a moon mage has to offer (from a strictly mechanical view) through simucoin JJ's/permanent Taisidon JJ's and global gweths for only a few dollars invested every month.

Once an hour, walking the astral plane will mostly lock your astrology. It's dangerous, but a slightly convenient and lazy way to train it. It's certainly not the only way.

Other ways include:
1. Observe constellations every 2 to 4 minutes based on whenever you get the message that you're ready to observe again, and when a prediction pool is full do a prediction. That will get you ~17/34 worth of experience just from the prediction alone.
2. Predict analyze every 90 seconds while at least one prediction is active. Works well in conjunction with #1, particularly if you start off with a weak prediction to get things going and using analyze to keep it moving while you build up a full pool.
3. Cast Tezirah's Veil either at a creature or without a target. Casting it on a single creature can be done approximately every 20 seconds due to the duration. Casting without a target will also teach and doesn't have the cooldown.
4. Cast Tezirah's Veil on yourself and do a prediction with the resulting prophetic insight. This only works well if you know an empath willing to ignore the fact that you are casting high sorcery or are okay with running between your non-justice casting spot and an NPC healer every 3 or 4 casts. Predicting either after every cast or after every time you get healed will quickly train astrology.

I just do #1 and #2 to train astrology. I've never used walking the ways as a means of training it. Ever since the prediction system overhaul and the exp from doing predictions was changed/improved, I've found this the best way to train astrology.

Before the prediction system overhaul, I trained astrology by reading through sigil scrolls (I carried 70 on me to scroll reading through) and scribing yavash onto oak limbs (part of the burin-making process which bypasses casting imbue). As far as I know, these options still work now, but the learning from doing predictions these days is much, much better.

I see. I just assumed that predicting capped out at some point, but it's good to know that scales.

There's a lot to the moon mage guild--I think a f2p player could definitely enjoy it, possibly purchasing a passport or two depending on how invested they are in things like sects. So many lovely spells and abilities, not just teleportation.

How well does this teach? Makes me want to forget enough to open five spell slots and try it.

Not very well. In the time it takes to lock sorcery, it will get astrology to about 9 to 11 or so. #4 with an empath, however, is the fastest way to lock astrology I have found. The trade offs are pretty hefty though.

Will the limitations hit a Paladin really hard? That guild was always one I considered.

Thoughts?

<<Will the limitations hit a Paladin really hard? That guild was always one I considered.

I think Paladins only have to worry about a couple of quested glyphs and your holy weapon, none of which are super mandatory. There's already a temporary visa in place for some other guild abilities, and I expect Paladin ones will follow eventually. Even so, you only need to buy a couple of passports to collect them currently.

Prayer badges which require travelling to all provinces, while nice, are not mandatory by any means.

I don't think there's anything else that would significantly limit a Paladin any more than it would limit any other guild.

Paladins aren't really restricted by F2P except for a few ability quests that you'd need to purchase temporary passports for.

If you need anything, feel free to ask me. You can reach me on chatter (if you are using a free account and are under 16th circle), by ringing the door bell at Jadewater Mansion (DIR MENTOR), via gwethdesuan or albredine crystal ring, or on AIM (IsharonDR).

Some good reading for Paladins:

>>Rbadger15: plus some crafting ability as well.

It's worth noting that everyone can now participate in all of the modern crafting skills. (No guild has a lopsided advantage in the modern crafting, unlike before.) However, as a nod to Paladins' former dominance in armorsmithing, they get three free armorsmithing techniques.

Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall rank!

You don't even need to do that any more. They can get a free pass to pick up the quests, and the quests are easy enough that they shouldn't have any problem.

Paladins are one of the guilds that are in a great place for F2P.

Have paladins been set up for that yet? Only a few quests for clerics and warrior mages have been from my understanding.

This, although this is the list of temporary visa abilities:
Warrior Mages - The Pathway Quests in Throne City (This is currently the ONLY pathway quest with a visa. For all other pathway quests, ask for a new one every 2 hours until you get one in Zoluren.)
Clerics - Infusion, Resurrection, Murrula's Flames, and Truffenyi
Thieves - Signs, Ambushes

Just so people know, the skinning quests do not have to be completed by the war mage. If they can get someone to run up to Haven to skin for them, then they won't have to wait out the timer.

Hello! Another returning player here. It's been many, many years since I last visited the realms. One of the reasons I left was that I could no longer justify the steep monthly pricetag, and I traded Elanthia for Hydaelyn. When I discovered DR had a free tier now, I couldn't talk myself out of at least peeking in. So now I have a shiny new cleric learning the ropes. So much has changed! Many of the things for the better, though I have to say I sorta miss the old combo system. There are a lot of things I have yet to try out, but if this sticks, I don't plan on staying a completely free account. So I have some questions that I'll just tack on here instead of starting a new thread.

Bank Booster: One of the things I plan to keep permanently boosted once I get to that point is the bank limit. Because I already know 10 plat isn't going to be enough to partake of the player crafted goods out there. My question regarding this is, if I buy the boost, and it reaches the end of its timer, what happens to the coin that's over 10 plat in the bank? Is it possible to activate another bank boost and stack it before the previous one expires?

Vaults: My character is quite a ways off from affording one regardless, but I haven't seen any mention of them on the lists. Are free accounts able to access one? I assume there are limitations if so.

Convert: Not exactly a question, but I see it's currently an unplanned possibility, so I'm going to go ahead and voice support for it as a fledgeling cleric. I understand that carving our beads still relies on the some-day-obsolete mech lore? It bothers me some that I'll be throwing experience at it that will one day be useless, and I'd be willing to buy a one time pass to ensure it isn't all rendered wasted effort when bead carving gets added to a crafting system.

You won't be able to deposit until you're under 10 plat but will be able to withdraw. You won't lose the coins.

You can get a pass to have access to vaults, otherwise you won't have access.

Learning mech isn't throwing it away. You can convert Mech experience into any Crafting lore once.
