I was thinking an addition to the profile verb would be kind of neat. A toggle to show the pronounciation of your name which you would input yourself? Just a thought. waves

Suppose I could have used my quote line for the IM toggle, too. But that was implemented...I know a lot of people have odd names that are pronounced funny. A few come to mind. It was a suggestion, no need to get snarky.

I actually suggested it because I'm tired of guessing what other peoples pronounciations are because sometimes it can be looked at more than one way. Would be nice, but I doubt everyone would be willing to put their pronounciation in their quote line =\. Admit it you've come across a few names that you were pronouncing wrong then told otherwise, yea?

I meant in game. I just assumed that if you're willing to do it on the forums, you'd be willing to do it in game as well. If someone calls the GMs gods, calls IMs pigeons, and/or uses -hugs- on the forums, chances are they do it in game too.
If you don't do silly stuff like that in game, then accept my apologies for the assumption. I'm a bit sensitive to stuff like that after sitting through a discussion including references to Rhianna on the Ratha green the other day.

So when I was talking to Khaoz after you killed him... turns out we say your name differently. I'm just assuming I'm wrong (When it comes to pronouncing words I usually am).
I know I run into Moh-zeek instead of Mah-zik fairly often. Moh-zik is acceptable (though not my preference) but I don't see how you get a zeek out it.

Why does it matter?
Typing 'Bob' is the same as typing 'Rolgermanoantoiousb' as long as I am pronouncing them both 'Ranger Steve'.
Which is the backwards way of saying even if someone is 'Bob', pronounced John Wayne, and 'Bohhb', pronounced President Barack Obama, as long as you type Bob or Bohhb, who cares.
Tell me how to pronounce Ucu.

I resisted until now, but I would use such a "Pronunciation" field to put in Slartibartfast. However, I support this suggestion as giggling idiots like me are probably in the minority (of people who use profile).

I think of it as oo'-soo like Caelumia. Although I'm not sure where she puts the stress.
Pronunciation is like novels and movies. Once you see the movie, your own interpretation of the novel tends to be restricted. Let it be up to the reader, I say, since otherwise you have them focusing on the 'right' way to pronounce the name rather than the character itself.

Kinda scary, that Reene got it right out of the bag. Stress on the S.
And this highlights my point, as does:
>Pronunciation is like novels and movies. Once you see the movie, your own interpretation of the novel tends to be restricted.
You can say Ucu however you want. Heck, I've never even said the word. You can 'call' him Mendasity for all I care, as long as you type the letters U, C, U, I'll be there.
What might be useful for a 'pronounce' field is more apt to be called a 'whatever I'm saying into english' field, for those people who feel the need to use utterly incomprehensable 'dialects'.

People only manage to spell Kougen correctly 30% of the time, so I doubt a pronunciation guide would even help.
Most names aren't that hard to pronounce if any effort was used to make them look or sound like a name, though.
C or G can be tricky because in English there's no logic behind using the hard or soft sound and diphthongs vary according to the letters around them, but they shouldn't be a struggle (refer to the line above).
Thread would be better if it didn't suck. -Mr. Glemm

In this I'm lucky, since there is no soft 'C' in Ilithic, so my preferred pronunciation of Caelumia worked out in the lore totally by accident.

Latin is nice because there's only one possible way to pronounce anything.
Cae (Kai) - lu (loo) - mi (mee) - a (ah).

Neither is acceptable. They're both inherently OOC and have no place in the game. Same "fog" for lag or any number of other insertions. There is never any reason to mention in-game outside of OOC whispers, much less over the gweth.

If you need to talk about GMs you're in an OOC situation anyway so there's no reason to refer to them as Gods, they're not the same thing.

Actually, it depends on whether you're using Classical Latin or Ecclesiastical Latin. I've always wondered whether Reene preferred Caelumia be pronounced 'kay' or 'chay.'
And of course there's still debate about which syllable of a Latin word gets the stress (outside of poetry).
