Nice video man, thanks for sharing. The learning curve when starting out can be pretty steep, but kudos for keeping a good sense of humor and still enjoying yourself through some of the frustrations of trial and error.

Unfortunately there aren't always mentors on duty, so it can sometimes be difficult if nobody's around when you first enter the game. However normally if one happens to log in while you're playing, you'll receive a notification and can be teleported directly to the mentor to help answer any questions you may have.

As for tips, I would say to try to continue utilizing the DIR command to help find your way around town and explore a bit more. It looks like you've already got Dwarf picked out for your race, but you can use DIR to help find a guild to join. You may also want to try to visit the weaponsmith or armorsmith if you'd like to try to purchase different weapons or armor (you should have around 1000 kronars or so to spend).

If you'd like to try hunting, ship's rats are good for a beginner and can be found via DIR SHIPYARD.

Also, if you type INFO you'll be able to see your character's stats. You'll start out with 600 TDP's (time development points) which are used to train these stats. DIR AGILITY, DIR INTELLIGENCE, etc. can be used to find your way to the appropriate training centers where you can STUDY to boost them.

The main Dragonrealms website isn't very good for helpful information, but http://elanthipedia.play.net is a great resource.

Specifically check out the New Player Guide: http://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/General_new_player_guide

Also, I find maps to be pretty helpful when trying to orient myself, so these may be useful as well.

A map of Jadewater Mansion (where you started): http://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/RanikMap0
And a map of the city of Crossing once you leave the mansion: http://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/RanikMap1

Hope that helps a bit, it's a lot to take in but pretty rewarding once you start to get the hang of it all.

P.S. - I got a good laugh out of you trying to pick a name that isn't already taken. The struggle is real.

My first ever battle in DR involved taking my newly minted Empath into rats. I took a swing and was immediately stunned for like a minute due to the shock. I had no idea that that was going to happen! The guildleader at that time had even stabbed me herself in order to show me how to heal. I was so frustrated that I went back to playing GS!

I did eventually come back. :)

First time I ever hunted I went the the shipyard in crossing to fight rats, and I died. Yes, go ahead laugh, shipyard rats killed me.

Before I ever went hunting, I got caught up in an invasion (I think it was elpalzi) in the Crossing, and died before I knew what was going on. I got dragged to the Cleric's guild and got fussed at for not having any favors. But I got to have a fun ghost conversation, so I suppose it was a good time.

A mentor patted me on the head and told me to go hunt goblins out the west gate. That went about as well then as it would today.

I remember killing about 20 rats and feeling pretty heroic. Then I was ambushed by a silverfish. I thought I was going to bleed to death because I had "cuts and bruises" when I checked health. I'm glad that silverfish no longer spawn in rats...

Side note: I had a macro-programmable keyboard back then, and accidentally renamed a folder "skin rat" in Windows 3.1. I could never figure out how to fix that folder.

I'm not sure this counts as a hunt- but there I was, a shiny new cleric- and I didn't even have a weapon! Weapons weren't standard new-character gear way back then like they are now. Anyway, I went exploring and wandered into a warehouse where I saw a silverfish. My first thought was, am I supposed to pet it? Fortunately, a slightly-more-experienced barb warned me to run before anything could happen. And off I went!

guys, thanks you all for the game, it was great to have adventures in DR. but for now I have to quit playing, cause of problems with Lich ( https://github.com/rpherbig/dr-scripts/issues/3092 ). I tried everything (I'm IT guy myself), but still got error and can't play normally. It's sad to quit such great game, but I've spend 3 days to learn how to fix this error and it's kinda become my mania, I can't continue playing without fixing it. Sad.

My last stream was in Russian, it was about favors...

This isn't the 90s. Automation of pointlessly repetitive actions is something that should have been done server side decades ago, but instead has to be handled client-side and frequently on an individual client basis.

Anyone playing with straight up Wizard or SF isn't really playing the same game as everyone else at this juncture and it isn't going to present a realistic experience for anyone who would prospectively be playing DR.

I'm sure there are still plenty of players who don't use Genie or Lich. I would probably still be using SF if I didn't play Fallen and as such have the need for something capable of more robust scripting. If you're ATK the scripts that you can write with Wizard and SF are plenty good enough.

Aside from auto-mapping, I can't think of anything a Genie and Lich script can do that a SF script can't do. It does it more efficiently, for sure, but it doesn't do anything that is game changing.

guys, once you would try Lich, you won't come back to regular clients, trust me.. it's different level of your gameplay customization with YAML file system.

The only problem - Ruby/Lich glitch at my PC and there are no people who could understand why.

Uh. Wow.

Triggers, and in particularly script-specific triggers, make a world of difference in how you interact with the game.

Universal triggers, variables, and subs that can be used to coordinate multiple scripts change the scripting game completely.

> > Uh. Wow.

Yeah. I don't play anymore, but I do check in on the forums every few months, and this is such a "wow" moment that I have to respond. Statements like this are partly what let to the actions that caused me to quit. Javac's statement shows a staggering disconnect between how people "play" this game, or how much of an advantage a client like Genie or Lich gives over standard clients like stormfront.

Using an obligatory car analogy, that's like saying you can get anywhere you want by walking or swimming and asking why anyone would need a car or plane.

A few examples:

- Automapper, as said, but woefully understated. A 28,000 line travel script with very specific start/end points has been replaced with a 150 line dynamic script that can move you between any point on one map to any point on another map without hand-coding the directions (and hoping that someone doesn't knock you down). Every script is like this, so while you were technically true on this point, most people can't debug or even understand a massive script like this... let alone write one. Those that can would spend months creating and maintaining it out rather than hours with the Lich/Genie.
- Timeouts on matchwaits. Stormfront will hang indefinitely if you run into a string it didn't expect. Genie can continue and route around it.
- Simultaneously running multiple scripts. This allows a form of multi-threading and your script can respond far more quickly than something in stormfront.
- Actions, which are basically very simple scripts. This could be something as simple as saving a data value for later use, or it could be as complex as triggering a randomized function that executes a second or third script without interrupting your first. This is especially true for text that notifies you that a cool-down is finished. You don't have to interrupt your optimized script to act on the text, assuming your script could see it at all.
- eval, or the ability to execute functions within a put/send command.
- Audio, specifically audio-based triggers when you see certain inputs
- Logical comparison, you actually have an "if/then" function in Genie.
- Advanced botting, just go to TF to see a few public examples or you can check a few known offenders in prime and plat.
- Timers, or time-based global-variables allowing you to more accurately fine-tune script actions, especially those with cooldowns.
- Imports and shared libraries, or the ability to create libraries that are referenced by your other scripts to ease coding requirements and boost efficiencies, especially when they auto-update so you don't have to fix your own bugs.
- Real-time character swapping, which is important for some botting. #connect <profile> doesn't exist in stormfront.
- Built-in functions such as random, goto, math, delay, counter, actions, return, send, parse, advanced subs, and other global variables... to name a few.

I'm not saying you can't get creative. With orders of magnitude more work, literally hundreds of thousands or even millions of [duplicated] lines of code, you can make stormfront look and act like genie or lich. The difference is that's less efficient, impossible to optimize to the same degree, will perform objectively worse (especially in dangerous situations), and requires so many man hours that it's unreasonable beyond a hand-full of specialized scripts.

>>Shift3

All that, with the exception of audio and autmapper, is about automation. Are you playing the game at that point? As I said before I got genie because I play TF where automation is the norm and doesn't violate rules. It isn't a necessary part of prime, assuming you're going to be ATK all the time. I started playing my prime empath again and the only script I'm using is automapper. That might not last forever but I'm certainly not going to need my fully automated TF scripts.

The idea that stuff like this is a necessary part of Dragonrealms is going to hurt the game. Look what it just did. People convinced Tangar that he needed Lich, he couldn't get it working so he thought he couldn't play anymore.

The nice thing about playing a MUD, most of them at least, is that there's no right or wrong way to do it. Everyone has their own personal taste, especially when it comes to the front-end. Let's try and stay respectful of that.

The staff has been told, politely and not so politely, for over a decade now that the player interactions with the game needed to be faster, more dynamic, less repetitive. Instead they've become slower, less dynamic, and more repetitive. The result is that people script and then mostly ignore the game as the script spends 15 minutes making an item. Or 60 minutes hunting.

THIS IS BAKED INTO THE DESIGN CHOICES THAT WERE MADE. I've griped about the staff failing to consider second- and third-order effects for years now, but this is one of the most poignant examples. If your game design is inherently uninteresting, people don't play your game. In the case of DR where people have years of investment in characters, this turns into scripting.

>>The idea that stuff like this is a necessary part of Dragonrealms is going to hurt the game. Look what it just did. People convinced Tangar that he needed Lich, he couldn't get it working so he thought he couldn't play anymore.

The only thing that can and has hurt DR are bad design choices. You cannot expect players not to find a way to make their lives easier. Blizzard learned this lesson really quickly when the WoW glider appeared. Not only did they realize that trying to spot botters was a huge waste of their time and energy, they discovered that most of their players simply didn't care. Instead they invested their time, money, and energy into making the game faster, more dynamic, and less repetitive. Boss fights got smaller and shorter. Dungeons got smaller and shorter. The grind virtually disappeared. Crafting became lightweight and one-click. And then botting stopped being a problem.

I 100% stand by my statement that it is a travesty that Simutronics continues to present players with The Wizard and Stormfront as viable options for playing their games. Their names are also a travesty, but that's a separate issue. The web client is embarrassing. Lyneya has stated and restated that new player experience is a priority and right here we have an excellent example of how new players are mislead and, really, abused by the sub-par capabilities of The Wizard and Stormfront.

Tangar is absolutely correct to quit if he can't use a decently modern MUD client to interact with DR. The game's design basically mandates it.

I still play the game fairly regularly. I use vanilla SF. I never said Genie and Lich didn't grant advantages, but it is a fallacy to say that we're playing different games.

>I 100% stand by my statement that it is a travesty that Simutronics continues to present players with The Wizard and Stormfront as viable options for playing their games.

I 100% stand by my statement that SF is perfectly viable. It requires some degree of skill at writing scripts, or a friend who will share scripts. You're free to disagree, but I script everything in SF just fine.

I agree with your fundamental assertion, and a lot of the features that make Genie and Lich attractive are a result of continually raising the level cap. I disagree that we lay this squarely at the feet of Simutronics, or that their decisions are somehow atypical of other games that have hit the 10-year-mark.

I was encouraging people to try new characters when the level cap was 100 years and years ago, and they universally rejected this notion in favor of demanding new, higher level content. Everquest continues to go through the same cycle, Ragnarok Online continues to go through the same cycle, and World of Warcraft fell onto that treadmill years ago. The Horde and Alliance are fighting over yet another mystical metal that is somehow EVEN MORE POWERFUL THAN THE LAST for what, the fifth time now?

There are only so many ways to horizontally expand a game after a decade or more without changing it into something different than its audience wants. Eventually you need to just keep going vertical.
