What exactly does this mean and when did we go from calling them critters to mobs?

In DR context it's pretty much exclusively used to refer to attackable/huntable NPCs. "Critters" is/was just a cutsey term to indicate the same thing, whereas mob is a recognized term within the genre/industry.
