I find it funny that my defenses lock before my first weapon skill gets halfway to being locked

Not unusual depending on guild, especially with multiple engaged critters.

I found that splitting my defenses relatively equally among evasion/parry/shield slows down the defense learning to match my weapons. I might also suggesting mixing a couple different types of armor four additional TDPs.

Yeah, you're right at the bottom edge of the skill you need, so it's going to be a bit slow to start. What guild are you? Using even a weak debilitating ability on them will bring them into your range. I agree in maybe tuning your stance a bit, but I definitely wouldn't abandon the hunt.

Sandies are definitely worth the effort.

warmage...

You recall the spells you have learned from your training.

In the chapter entitled "Aether Manipulation", you have notes on the Ethereal Shield [es], Elementalism, and Expansive Infusions [ei] spells.

In the chapter entitled "Fire Manipulation", you have notes on the Fire Shards [fs] and Ignite spells.

In the chapter entitled "Earth Manipulation", you have notes on the Reinforced Infusions [rin] spell.

In the chapter entitled "Air Manipulation", you have notes on the Zephyr and Air Lash [ala] spells.

You recall proficiency with the magic feats of Faster Targeting and Targeted Mastery.

You have 3 spell slots available.

dont have a debilitating spell.... was saving up for swirling winds 3 slots, may have to get other spells first

As a WM myself, I would never say don't get SW, but yeah, IP or Arc Light would be perfect for you in this situation. Choosing one of them would obviously delay getting SW, but might be worth it if your plans include going up the water or electricity trees and you are doing okay with your defenses.
