Shield Buying Advice 12/22/2013 10:05 PM CST
I would be glad for some advice on buying a new shield.

The PC is a moon mage and prefers an arm worn shield. He's using an old buckler now, but it gets damaged easily and that's a bit of a bother. Additionally, one wonders if a different shield or construction might offer better protection.

There is a fair amount of variety in the market place as far as replacement options. I've seen a target made from damite for 1.2k pk, a small mammoth hide shield for 10k pk, and a gargoyle-hide target for 35pk. Quite a wide range.

If stealth isn't a concern just buy the shield that offers the highest range of protection. If your main complaint is frequent repairs the damite target will be the most durable of those you listed and thus require the fewest trips to the repair shop. If money is no object find someone to sell you the small shield from Stolen from the Moons.

You might consider training up a hundred or 2 ranks in forging or outfitting. It doesn't take much skill at all to quickly repair your own gear and it's faster and more convenient in most cases than visiting an npc repair shop.

Arm-worn shield for a moon mage is going to be small, and small shields are best made of leather. Gargoyle hide will likely do just fine. You may want to talk to your provider about making one that's lower in hindrance.

As an armor-tertiary, you are restricted to wearing small shields. (Modern bucklers are now categorized as medium shields.)

Id suggest going with a small shield over a targe due to being survival secondary. If you have the money look at diamond-hide first, if thats too expensive go with onyx-hide. Stay away from the mammoth.
