Best way to backtrain cloth 05/31/2010 11:13 AM CDT
Starting from 0 ranks, what would be some good options to backtrain the cloth armor skill? I was sitting around in water sprites for a while but that didn't really move the skill much.

For leather I grabbed a full set and stanced 0/0/100 evasion/parry/shield, then sat around in various swarms of undead during the war. Evading and parrying didn't seem to teach anywhere near as well as blocking.

As my backtraining weapons and stealths moved me up the critter ladder I brought evasion up to compensate, but I don't think it's actually necessary to start low. You can probably learn fine against anything as long as you're primarily shield blocking.

Anything that swarms and attacks frequently is a good choice.

This may be relic data, but doesn't the act of shield blocking move armor in and of itself?

That would be my guess, based on my experience with backtraining. I'd advise against hunting what you normally hunt while trying backtrain any armor (especially cloth) for obvious reasons, but as long as you're blocking you should be learning.

You're going to learn the most armor from a shield block. I agree with the advice to step down the hunting ladder and rely on shield 100%. Alternately, wear cloth armor somewhere non-vital and befriend an empath.

It's a boar. It doesn't like you.

Thanks, the shield blocking bit of information is gold--Total night and day difference.

Enemies whiffing(even if you're at level in terms of armor skill) just doesn't teach well enough IMO.

Yeah it is a little backwards since learning armor is basically learning how to maneuver in said armor.....evading or parrying should teach just as good and I may even say evading should teach the best because it's the highest success. Armor exp needs redone like skinning was.....ie you shouldn't have to debuff or cripple yourself to train it but quite the opposite, buffing yourself should train it better.

I'm a Moon Mage so armor isn't my best skill but I did just make the switch to leather / cloth armor. I had been using a combination of LC / HC. I found myself using stealth attacks more and more as I moved up the critter ladder so I decided to go with the lighter armor. I wore leather on my chest, abdomen, back and arms with cloth on my legs. I kept the metal armor on head and hands. This worked very well and I was able to hunt almost at level. Just one step down on the critter ladder.
