Best Short Bow 08/08/2011 07:35 AM CDT
I've had a look at Elanthipedia and a few other sources, but can't seem to come to a conclusion on the best 'readily available' SB.

I'm sitting at higher agil than strength, which would suggest balance is more important to me (?).

I currently use a Nisha Bow.

My questions are as follows (all relative to the Nisha Bow):

1. Is there a store bought short bow that offers better balance (without gimping suitedness)? Load RT aside.
2. Will fletched bows give better stats? And if so, which one? Also, do you know the mech/sb/etc stats required to make it?

Any feedback will be appreciated!

I'm short bow prime. FWIW, there are only two bows I conisder.

1) A Nisha Short Bow (r/f) - It's replaceable, it is the fastest loading SB in the game, and arrows are really all that matter!

2) A Hunters Short Bow (w/r)- It 'supposedly' has a bonus to snipe, it's tied for second in loading time, and the balance is the best, but arrows are really all that matter!

2a) You need to find a 100th+ Circle Ranger that is short bow prime (or just awesome with all bows) and have them carve it. I think that this time there are probably about 3 that I know of, so probably at least triple that I don't know.

Now with this being said, I also own about 8-12 different short bows that collect dust in my vault. If you send me a PM, I'll app each one and send it to you.

There is also this that I think Sauva (Hanryu) put together: http://drplat.com/CombatEquipmentCompendium.xls

p.s. I think every bow that's "sold" from shops is Reasonable Balance and Fairly Suited (except the steel shortbow which is f/f)

Any of the reduced load-time short bows will do, but the Nisha short bow is both storebought and easy to replace, which makes it an easy choice.

The reinforced elder hirdu bow also has a reduced load time, but is difficult to find and very expensive.

Ultimately, nothing matters but your arrows.

Very informative responses, thanks for that.

Do you by any chance know what sort of ranks in Mech/SB are required to cap a Hunters Short Bow?

I think I will stick with the Nisha until I find the above.

Not 100% sure, but the numbers I've always heard are:

100th Circle Ranger
300+ Mech Lore
650+ in Shortbow (I think elanthipedia says 640)

It's 640 SB to carve a capped SB (or 640 LB to carve a capped LB).

A capped SB, carved by someone with 640 or more ranks will appraise at 3200 lirums.
A SB carved by someone with 620 to 639 ranks will appraise at 3100 lirums.
A SB carved by someone with 600 to 619 ranks will appraise at 3000 lirums.

And so on. Every 20 ranks decreases the app by 100 lirums.

So just appraise it, get a certain, do a little math and you can see the effective ranks of the person who carved it. If it only appraises for 2000 lirums...you're pretty far from cap.

I got to these numbers by carving a bow every 10 to 20 ranks as I progressed from ~200 SB to well over 640.

Thanks for reading. Hope it was helpful.

p.s. mine was for regular short bow. NOT hunters.

hunters are not worth while, IMO. creature hunting you want to do more damage, staying hidden should be easy. PvP who snipes? don't want to give them point. fire, re-hide.

just my opinion. fine if you disagree (but you're wrong) (i kid)

Question about hunter's bows. Do they also give a bonus to poaching, or just to sniping?

Depends on who you are PvP against. If you hiding is well over their perception, they you want to stay hidden.

But yes, in some instances you are right. (and wrong) (i kid)

Then I agree that they're worthless for hunting, but have to disagree about using them in PvP. I don't use snipe either because of the chance of them getting the spot effect on me, but I find poach very useful in PvP. It doesn't have quite the bonus that you get from snipe, but there is no spot effect if you fail the stealth check.
