[Skin and Bones]
The interior of this off-white canvas tent is sparsely furnished. Aside from smoky lanterns at either end, there is little of note other than the merchandise for sale. The one odd note that saves the space from utter mundanity is the peculiar choice of hues for the displays. You also see a mauve mannequin with some stuff on it, a puce mannequin with some stuff on it, a chartreuse mannequin with some stuff on it, and a tent flap.
Obvious exits: none.

These are bone armor:
On the mauve mannequin you see a matte black woven reed mask, some matte black woven reed gauntlets, some matte black woven reed greaves, some matte black woven reed vambraces and a matte black woven reed breastplate.
On the chartreuse mannequin you see some chalky white bone armor etched with a three-masted pirate ship, a tiger-faced bone mask, a bear-faced bone mask, a wolf-faced bone mask and some chalky white bone gauntlets.
These are cloth armor:
On the puce mannequin you see a forest green quilted hood, some green quilted gloves, a forest green quilted shirt with narrow white stripes, some forest green quilted pants with white piping down the legs and a white padded cloth robe with scattered brown spots.

I posted a list of the apps in the General Discussion Folder.

down to moderate hindrance now with 31 ranks in bone armor for my paladin, although he's extremely hindered with the whole bone set-up plus his large arm shield.

Bone = Cloth = 21 ranks

Every individual piece apps at unhindered, the full set-up is very hindered.

Let me see if I can explain a few factors in this. First off when you get the "if you were only wearing this item" appraisal, it is completely ignoring any and all chance of multi armor penalty. It is saying exactly what it means, if you were only wearing this item.

Additionally, the entirety of your skill is being applied against that single item and that item alone. However when determining total hinderance the base hinderancees of all items within a skill are gathered together and then your skill is applied. Let me see if I can explain with some bogus math. Let's say the threshold for "unhindered" is 20 points of hinderance and your single item of cloth or bone has 100 points of base hinderance. Now your skill might apply to it and knock it down to 19, which would message as unhindered in that item alone and all 4 of your items will message that way. However when totaled together your 4 100 point bone items total 400 points of bone hinderance and 100 of cloth hinderance. Next we look at what your main body armor is and find it to be cloth, so the multi penalty is applied to your bone accessories, which make up the vast majority of your hinderance. Now we apply your skill and while your cloth shroud still drops to 19, the 400 bone which was increased due to multi won't drop nearly that far, thus you end up showing as very hindered overall.

Awesome Oolan, thanks for the that explanation. It is very close to what I expected was happening, but it's fantastic to hear it from you! I'm saving that to repost when similar questions will invariably arise.

I hope you didn't take my comment as a complaint, I was just mentioning my apps so we can try to decode what guilds can work down what part of cloth and bone hinderance.

Of course, if you wanna just tell us...

So theoretically, one would be better off wearing the most hindering (cumulative) armor on the torso, so as to gain the least 'extra' hinderance from multi armor?

<<if you were only wearing this item" appraisal, it is completely ignoring any and all chance of multi armor penalty>>

only problem here is i'm appraising them with my paladin <circle 46>. i shouldn't be getting Any multi armor penalty for just my bone set-up plus shield.

>inv armor
You are wearing a tiger-faced bone mask <bone>, an enameled tower shield painted with the Therengian royal crest, some chalky white bone gauntlets <bone> and some chalky white bone armor etched with a three-masted pirate ship <bone>.

You're not getting any mixing penalty; you're only getting the penalty for wearing so many bone items (with great and fair hinderance) while not having trained down bone armor's base hinderance all the way. I bet once you get closer to 100 ranks you'll be unhindered.
