Grey Raven - polished steel war hammer with a wire-wound oak haft 09/28/2013 01:32 AM CDT
Has anyone picked up the polished steel war hammer with a wire-wound oak haft from the Grey Raven Commissary? I'm considering getting it but would like to hear some first hand accounts on it. The up front stats aren't the best, but the shards aspect seems pretty interesting. Are the shards built into the weapon and you just "apply" them to the weapon, or are we talking about adding player-carved stone shards? Would you get it again?

Thank you!

Based on the information released when the weapons first came out, these are the ones that don't generate the shards themselves. You will need to apply shards made from the carving system when you run out.

I suspect it's the second kind mentioned in the last line.

If so, I believe any shard will be sufficient even if they're... substandard.

And I'm not surprised you're confused, I had a hell of a time finding that info. Seems it was not well named, and I can't fix it right now.

Someone remind me to fix it when epedia is unlocked.

I've got one of the obsidian chippers, so I can give a few comments based on that. I'm not sure how much will carry over, though.

First, there's a bug where slivers always lodge in the head, regardless of what part of the body you struck when the chipping triggered. Since the head is vital, I guess that's a beneficial bug.

Second, you recover the slivers after you kill the critter. If the same holds for the hammer's shards, you may be able to re-apply them, meaning you won't need to constantly craft new ones.

Third, mine has a condition bug. No matter how much I use it, it never drops below "practically in mint condition".

Fourth, and probably most importantly, damage from lodged items is very underwhelming. Even with 5 slivers lodged in a creature's head, I need to wait 10-15 minutes before I see any significant wounds. That's more than enough time for me to have killed it with conventional methods, so the chipping is just an amusing gimmick, not actually useful.
