For those of who are confused and scared over these "big ugly tweaks" with the big three spells (Burn, Calm/Hypnotize, Telekinetic Throw), here's the run down:

BURN:

Overall, why? To generally clean up and address several longstanding bugs in the spell design.

Details:

1) Burn will require a bright moon or the sun to be cast -- this is a change from the previous plans to make it require one of the moons.

2) Casting on evil things won't get you immediately jailed.

3) More damage messaging. Corrected messaging overall.

4) Critters will drop items held in their hands if you blow their arms off.

5) Will be castable on items in an attempt to destroy said item.

6) Burn currently doesn't check for armour; it will, which means it'll also have a chance of destroying said armour.

7) Messaging on creatures that are immune to fire damage will be corrected (no more 'shining straight through a rock guardian'). In the same vein, critters that are cold-based will be a bit more susceptible.

8) It'll be possible to cast in foggy areas if you have enough power.

CALM/HYPNOTIZE:

Overall, why? C'mon, we all know that five mana to immobilize most any critter in the game is a bit overpowered. Also, what it does now doesn't really live up to the name Hypnotize. ;)

Details:

1) Calm effect will be unchanged; you'll still be able to calm whatever you were able to calm previously.

2) Immobilization effect will require greater skill and/or mana to achieve, but will still be possible.

3) Nestled between the Calm and Immobilizing effects will be a way to command critters to take actions: to flee, lie down, bow to you, etc, which can be detrimental to the critter as well as fun at parties.

TELEKINETIC THROW:

Overall, why? Telekinetic Throw does such high levels of damage. It's always been obvious.

1) Damage will be reduced. Spell will still be lethal with enough power/skill and an appropriate item.

2) Spell combo will be introduced -- if you cast Dazzle on a Moonblade, the Moonblade will shatter, sending slivers to float around one's head. These slivers will be the first object "chosen" by TKT (and eventually TKS). Slivers will naturally be small, and will linger around the person for some length of time.

The changes to Burn are nearly complete, thus you'll probably see those released first. I actually excited about the possibilities with Calm/Hypnotize, and so will work on that one next. You've been warned. :)
