Status of the task system? 08/12/2008 03:45 PM CDT
I'm just curious as to whether there are any presently ongoing developments with the task system?

The potential of such a system is just so huge that I'd certainly think/hope it would be worthy of devoting almost an entire team of GMs to constantly expanding and improving on it... I'm not knocking any GMs who have or are working on it presently, of course, but I do feel that it would be outstanding to see it receive some serious (visible) development and love.

There's always the chance that they're holding that Thing or That Other Thing in reserve as a surprise release, but as far as we know the only thing being worked on or planned on being worked on is the Bounty System (see the simucon notes for details.)

Bards have specifically been told that performance based tasks will be added to the task system at some point. From the bard meeting in April:

<Dartenian says, "And we also have..."
<Dartenian asks, "How many of you have tried out the TASK system?"
<Dartenian says, "Boring, but a good way to make coin early on."
<Dartenian says, "We've got some performance tasks coming."
<Dartenian says, "Which will probably include some experience bonuses."

Some suggestions that have probably been posted before, I'm sure:

1) Non-monetary rewards. Items, favors, classes (experience), training (TDPs) and such. If it's weapons or armor, better than store-bought.

2) Boss creatures carrying superior armor/weapons (better than store-bought).

3) A way to give bundles for skin collecting tasks. Guh. "Find me 14 pelts." A bunch of spam messages later, "Good job."

4) Tiered tasks. That guy who had you do something for him might remember you're good at this kind of thing and give you a nicer task.

5) A different solution to the scripting issue. Before the timer was added, deliver tasks were way too easy to script. Mostly because the delivery tasks didn't make sense. The Crossing Barbarian guild leader can't move four rooms to give something to the Crossing Empath guild leader? Please. Only give delivery tasks that have a destination of a wandering NPC or an NPC in another town.

6) Pay better for traveling farther to complete a task.

7) Skill related things.
a. "Go to the performance hall and perform a perfect concerto for the audience." ~Instrument
b. "Go to the Asemath Academy and teach a class to the acolyte for five minutes." ~Teaching
c. "Make me a rapier that will pierce heavily into my opponent in my duel tomorrow." ~Smithing
d. "Translate this into Common. I hear the Academy has books for Elven if you don't speak it that well." ~Scholarship
e. "A friend of mine was hurt, but can't afford a healer. Take him some herbs or find an Empath." ~Empathy/Alchemy
f. "Stea...Acquire me a diamond ring." ~Trading/Stealing
g. "I think my wife is cheating on me... Follow her for me." ~Hiding/Stalking
h. "I have this wild dog. Teach it some manners for me." ~Animal Lore
i. "I locked myself out of my house! Help me get in." ~Lockpicking
j. I give up... There are lots of skills, so let us use more than weapons and skinning, please?

8) Available in more areas. It's currently only available in Crossing and Riverhaven, right?

9) Pay better for doing a task quickly, or worse for doing it slowly.

10) Guild specific stuff.
a. "I have some pests in my house. I hear you Barbarians can roar really loudly. Scare them away for me, eh?"
b. "I hear you have a magical song that will put anyone to sleep. Get my daughter to stop crying and go to sleep?"
c. "A horrible creature cursed me! Quick, uncruse me before I die!"
d. "I'm son has come down with some horrible disease! Cure him please?"
e. "Alright fortune teller, tell me my future."
f. "My mother is old and infirm, and needs an escort to Somewhereville. Can you Protect her?"
g. "I need an ingredient from the side of Mountain Whatchamacallit. It's in the middle of nowhere, think you can find it?"
h. "I need someone eliminated. Quietly."
i. "This prescious gem must be transported to the Duke of Theretown. I'd only trust something this valuable with a reputable Trader."
j. "That building needs demolished, but we don't want to risk injury. Make the ground shake or something so it falls over."

That turned out longer than I expected. I loved this system when it came out, but the novelty wore out quickly, and I made more money hunting than trying to find tasks I was willing to do.

This task is given of course by Katie Holmes.

This.

Look, I'll be frank. I have nearly 2,000 plat in the bank right now and absolutely nothing left to spend it on. Good for the newbies I run into that I end up thinking are neat, but it gets dull being rewarded with money for things.

Please figure out a way to give us things that are unconventional and interesting. I would love getting neat verby but useless items or experience or TDPs, even if the task was longer and convoluted.

The rest of Opieus' suggestions were awesome as well, but this one stuck out for me. I am tired of money. I have enough money. Give me something new. Please?

The assassinations will be part of the task system once the PROFILE verb is released. There was also some discussion about coding a ARREST verb and having folks pick up bounty style tasks for wanted criminals. I can only imagine that would be after the Justice rewrite (if at all).

A minor point of correction... The assassinations will only be part of the task system AFTER the PROFILE verb is released, not immediately subsequent to.

one problem with the task system i've found with the killing tasks to recover an object- it only looks at skill ranks in weapons, and thus some are hopelessly over the head of some characters.

I recieved exactly the same task - to go kill beisswurms and recover an object - for both my MM and a commoner. the MM had 40 ME as her top weapon, the commoner had 35 ME. But.... the MM is 37th circle and also has over 100 TM. So although beisswurms are a challenge to her to fight melee, she can wipe em out with her magic. The commoner has no such other skills to fall back on. So that would pretty much be suicide to go in there with that character.

It depends entirely on the type of armor you use, Gonif. Metal armor might as well be 10 feet thick for all the damage that gets past it.

I still don't see that ending well for the commoner.

Sorry I'm way behind, who can do the tasks (must be premium etc.), who gives em, if you don't want to mention everyone..who gives em on the islands?

I believe anyone can do the tasks. I'm not sure they are even restricted by level. Just have to ask the right person <NPC> FOR TASK. I don't know all the tasks people but most of the guild leaders in Crossing and Haven will give you something to do. I don't think there is anyone on the islands yet.

the only restriction i've seen is the boss & kill tasks. Empaths don't get them.
